I wondered about that too when I first started.... I think it is good your are thinking through things and asking questions..

I asked my instructors at school and other drivers and got pretty much the same answers as you are getting here..

I dont take a lot of valuables on the road with me.. my expensive jewelry and stuff are safe at home.. on the road I only take cash, a debit card for an account I opened for me on the road.. wnich is separate from my household account... I do keep a couple stashes of cash, but I do have them cleverly hidden.. and my budgeted road money.. my GPS, phone, notebook, CB and xm radio... then just my clothes and stuff..

My first truck when I was new.. had way too much stuff.. didnt realize it till I had to clean it all out.. lol

Now.. I keep it pretty simple...

My husband and I have renter's insurance. The point of renter's insurance is to cover your personal items in case of fire, theft, etc. We have enough insurance to cover replacing ALL items in our apartment, storage and his truck.

Think about it past the GPS or cell phone. How much would it cost you to go out and replace 2 weeks worth of clothes today? I know my deductible is lower than what it would cost. What about if there was an electrical fire in your truck and you had to replace those things and your fridge, microwave, bedding, etc?

Broodmom, if this is something that truly concerns you, check with your insurance agent and see if those items are currently covered under your homeowner's/ renter's insurance. Also find out what the deductible would be if there was a claim and if it is current replacement cost or value replacement. (I don't think I used the right phrases, but one pays for what it would cost to replace the item at TODAY's price. The other one would pay you the depreciated value of the item. Say a 5 year old TV, for instance.) If not, get a quote for their minimum amount. Depending on the items in question, I would ask for a quote in the $1k - $5k range. My next suggestion would be to have an inventory list of items on the truck with serial/ model numbers with pictures kept in a safe, separate location.

**Disclaimer** I am NOT an insurance agent. I just like keeping things in order to cover my possessions.

I carried about $5K in photographic equipment. If I was driving today that would be ~$20K. OTOH, my $1500 laptop then would only be $500 today. The data and software disks, whole 'nother story. Photoshop was $600. MapPoint was $600. MS Office was $600.

I had buddies toting things like $1K bikes and parachutes and golf clubs.

    My homeowner insurance covered mine.

OP instead of buying this insurance that you will most likely never use and your money going to a board of directors and share holders why not open a savings account and put 50$ a month in there as your own insurance. If you need it use it, if you don't then use it to upgrade your electronics and start the fund over.

Also keep in mind all ~ insurance works like credit and you have an insurance score that works similarly to credit. You make a claim your score gets worse, do you really want this score going the wrong way over something you could easily insure yourself in the manner I noted above?

I have a rider policy for the items of my driver's and the equipment in the truck that is not covered by the commercial policy (nav unit, XM radios, CBs, Inverter, Laptop). Normally you need a rider or you get a personal property coverage from the insurance company. The amount is set at so much per 100 dollars of coverage.

Yeah, I guess it's not worth it. I know I don't even pay the extra on my phone. $120 a year to cover a $400 phone seems excessive. My house insurance was worth it though when we had a big hailstorm a few years ago. Roof was 20 years old, got a brand new roof that I probably wouild have had to pay for anyway in a few years. Lucked out. We had to pay a tenth of the cost.

This seems relevant and I d been wondering the same thing, I have a $1700 IPad , $300 TV , $2000 MacBook , dvds , $1000 cell phone, $400 Apple Watch , $120 microwave air fryer, $200 ninja foodie , play station and games maybe $1000 in value , exercise equipment, clothing, $300 comforter . I live in my truck, I don’t have a home address just a P.O. Box. Theft and An accident could result in the loss of my possessions, why is wanting to Insure them not a good idea? I know that many renters insurance will cover 10% of belongings on the truck, but I don’t have a home address so I am unable to utilize it , would love a solution.
