Long time lurker, first time poster. I love this forum, have came here to my answer questions for years. Finally created myself an account...

I just turned 18 last month and went into CDL school right away, just got my CDL last week.

For a few years I have had my heart set on driving a truck someday so that’s what I’m here to do.

I know there’s local companies out there that will hire 18 year olds to do local runs, but I’m not really interested in that. I’m not exactly your typical 18 year old, a few years ago I started a small ecommerce business (with the help of my parents legally speaking) so I have a significant amount of experience with how business works and pretty good idea of how the trucking industry operates.

I’ve already filed everything I need and have my LLC set up and USDOT numbers for intrastate

Throughout the last few years I’ve been saving knowing I’ll get to this point someday, I’m ready to buy a decent used truck and trailer in cash, but I’m wondering how much I should be expecting to pay for insurance before I go shopping for quotes. It would be a older truck 2013 is what I have my eye on now.

I’m kinda worried that insurance rates may suck up all my profits, but I guess I shall see. I have a perfect driving record personally with no accidents or tickets.

My current personal insurance is with state farm so I’m thinking I’ll contact the agent at our local office to get my first quote.

I guess what I’m asking with this long post is, will insurance rates make me rethink my entire plan? I’m in washington state if that makes a difference.

    Thank you! :)

    Good for you.

Find a truck and trailer that you want and get the vins for them. Call Progressive and get a quote.

Best of luck. I admire and can appreciate what you’re trying to do here. I hope you make it big!

Just a heads up, I just tried this exact thing last week for the exact same reason because I too have a personal statefarm policy. Come to find out statefarm doesn't offer commercial insurance. I wouldn't waste my time if I were you. Ended up insured by progressive. Good luck driver

I would suggest you start with calling your agent. They may know where to send you to look? You got a tough row to plow but, I’m sure it can be done? Insurance is expensive even for seasoned vets. Heck car insurance is expensive when your under 25…

If you've been a long time lurker here you would already know that getting insurance quotes is the first step instead of wasting time on anything else.

My insurance company and underwriter won’t insure anyone under 21 now in this state. This includes operations who haul dirt and gravel, two major companies in this area use the same companies and have to put their under 21 drivers onto other vehicles because of this.

I'm going to be the bad guy. I suggest you wait. At least for a year. For two reasons. First being truck prices are stupid right now. Second. Get out there and learn how it is with a starter company. While nothing says you can't be successful. Just jumping right in without any experience. Most fail doing that.

If you do ignore my advice above. Be sure you have enough reserve capital for at least 6 months of loss. 99% of failure is due to running out of reserve.

My insurance was 23k my first year and I was 30 with12 years experience, however that was unlimited miles, if you limit yourself to 100/150 it drops it a lot, since you or any freight you haul cannot cross state lines any way until you turn 21.

I know you said the local run wasn’t what you wanted but I would highly consider doing it to gain experience actually driving as well and just stocking away as much money as possible until the market pops and you can actually get a deal on a new (or 2000 and down) truck of your choice, or you turn 21 so you are not limited to your state, and insurance will still probably be ridiculous at that point.
