Yes.........Within our group of companies, one debits newer power (0-3 years old) units as their perception is that the newer units will generate more miles, therefore more exposure, other carriers no.

Model type of power unit is typically not an issue, unless hauling liquids in a "truck" (pintle hook) & tank trlr in lieu of a tractor (5th wheel).....even then it's just a different price.....not an acceptability issue.

Radius of operations is a key element........a OTR driver doing 150,000 miles a year will pay more than a intrastate operator doing 80,000 miles.

Commodities are usually more of a carrier appetite issue than anything else.......we don't have any liability issues with milk haulers, but the phys dam for that class sucks due to the plethora of total loss rollovers , so we stay away from the phys dam........some will like bull haulers, others run the other way for similar reasons.

White Volvo's out of Chicago are seemingly on everyone's "be cautious" list.........the good Chicago container hauling operations are few and far between.

Oil & Gas operations results in a smaller group of carriers willing to provide coverage.

Reputation wise, produce/reefer ops going coast to coast have issues.....usually due to team driving issues. We tend to debit team driving risks, as their miles are typically higher than we see with non team ops.........duh

Calcna, what company are you with, could I get a policy from your company? My driving record is clean, the state dismissed the ticket after talking to the tow driver and a witness. Thanks please let me know. Richie

Rickg77.....I run a branch office for an insurance company that writes a lot of trucking. I'm not here soliciting business, just to provide real information from a source that knows the insurance side of trucking, and am willing to provide honest responses to inquiries.

Find a good local Independent insurance agency that knows trucking...there are retail specialists all over the country......they will know the marketplace and be able to secure the coverages you need at reasonable pricing. People do need at times however to get real.......if your mvr sucks......or you've had multiple losses as a driver you SHOULD pay a lot more than the guy will a million miles accident free. Just understand when you call a # from a billboard along side northbound 99 you may not be talking to a real professional, and therefore someone who really is trying to help you not just in it for the commission income. The retail insurance "churners" are only in it for the 10% commission they get........so Get what you are paying for....professional advice.

Actually Insurance is carefully regulated through the State Government. Not a ponzi.

There was a time I had a bunch of tickets with a car, which in those days did not matter because they were not tractor trailer tickets. (Prior to 1994 CDL laws) there was a seperation in those days. I had to obtain liability insurance only from the State through a designated local agent who provided same it was not very good insurance but just the minimum liability needed to get and keep your car on the road.

Fast forward to today, We used to keep full coverage and civil liability for two people, two cars and household etc at good rates but now it's just myself and one car that has essentially no value, the full coverage means that if something happens in a storm losing a window to hail stones or a tree limb near a tornado etc they will replace said window without a fuss.

Regarding the 48,000 dollar increase in your insurance costs? You need to look around to another agent who will provide insurance possibly for less. Or get out of that particular type of employment and be a humble company driver possibly.

Regarding Team Operations, yes there is a huge amount of mileage involved, but a team driver set up is valued by all trucking companies, to them it means the truck can roll on 24/7 without the annoying problem of driving hours and Logs as we have done as a Husband and Wife team. There is another benefit of never being late for any reason to a reciever. They cannot complain. It does not matter what appointments they demand as long you can still physically travel 1250 miles every 24 hours to get there. Obviously if the load is due the next morning and you are 2000 miles away, you tell Dispatch nope. Not taking it.

As far as Insurance concerns let's say that ABS, engineering and good tires have saved their ##### when a group of half breeds in a car stop dead in front of me to deliberately create a crash where they will get a payoff while I go to jail and company loses the truck or load. I have had people do that in front of me more times than I want to count. So far I have not hit them. One pair of teenagers in Texas Dallas to be exact should have been caught under my trailer and run over mashed into diced stew by the tandems for being stupid getting between me and the high ramp barrier in the S winding single lane ramp flyover from I-35E to I30 west one night. I don't know where I found the extra 3 feet and room to scrape my right hand outside tires in addition to almost ripping the DOT bar off from under the trailer doors to save their stupid lives. What did I get? A middle finger. So thank you and up yours to the little teen #### in his black Madza convertable. Enjoy the rest of your lives in which I bought and paid for you on that ####### ramp that should have killed you quite badly that night.

If I mashed them, I would still be in Dallas to this day probably. Involuntary manslaughter times two to start things off.
