They actually own 100's of acres on both sides of the hwy. so unfortunately it's hard for me to believe they "you" lose money. Between progressive, geico, farmers, State Farm spending 100's of millions of dollars just in advertising I hardly think they are taking a 3-5% loss.Cat sdp Thanks this. -
Single owner operators are the safest trucks on the roads, but micro fleets are actually the most accident prone. Grow a bit more -- say, above 30 trucks, and these small fleets are the 2nd safest group behind owner operators. From there, accident rates start rising again the larger you grow (with mega fleets being only slightly safer than small fleets).
See the red line for accident rate vs fleet size:
If you think about it, it makes sense -- an owner operator is going to take the most care to protect his livelihood, so he's the safest.
But most micro carriers are kind of spread too thin. With 4 or 5 trucks, the owner is probably still driving close to full time, but doesn't have enough trucks to support office staff so he's burning the candle at both ends and likely coming up short on compliance. Plus these companies tend to be the ones suffering from cash flow problems that cause repairs to be put off. And, unfortunately, these are often the companies hiring drivers the mega carriers won't touch (obviously this isn't you, but far too many micro carriers are this way).
As that micro carrier grows into a small carrier, it hires dedicated staff and generally gets better systems put in place. Yet it is still small enough that they can be very selective on whom they hire (this sounds like you). So they have the best drivers or, more likely, don't hire as many bad drivers which makes them very safe.
Growing above that size, and you generally have to start compromising on drivers in order to fill seats. So mega carriers accident rates go up.Last edited: Sep 15, 2016
