Good luck.
I got my CDL at 18 and started driving my old man's truck then, and also drove for several others. How they got me insured I have no clue. I did have some 'trucking experience' although not driving I had been helping my old man move equipment from about the time I could remember.
The last 2 weeks I have been going through insurance applications left and right, and going through and fixing, creating, or updating about everything safety related for my little company. My carrier I have had for about 6 or 7 years now dropped us because we're getting a little more into transports than they like, and going through the whole re application process has been really eye opening to me. Progressive is who I ended up going with.
One thing just today while speaking with my agent I brought up the "what if I want to hire someone and train them to drive" basically cause I feel like dirt trucking is similar to bull hauling in the sense it's easier to train a cowboy to drive truck than a truck driver to haul cows; it's easier to teach an operator to drive a dump truck than to teach a truck driver how to drive on a job site. She basically told me Progressive will let you hire anyone, you're just going to pay for it.f1n3x Thanks this. -
Losses are really the main factor, we've been in a bad rut of one a year lately, which really hurt me, especially with having to change carriers and drove my premiums up by about 25%.
That $60K number even makes me cringe, not knowing more about where you're at, if rates around there are reasonable, if your work lasts year round or is seasonal, and how many contacts you have that sling dirt around that will keep you busy. If it pencils out maybe gut the high premiums and anticipate them going down as you continue in business, loss free mind you. It may also not hurt to try to find an old hand who wants to work part time and add him to your insured drivers, that may help draw your rate down a little.
One thing I have found is that having a good working relationship with your insurance agent is very valuable in this business. They can help you out and tell you what will usually work and help you in your particular situation.
Adjusters on the other hand, don't get me started on them.f1n3x Thanks this. -
It is better to start your truck insurance company and insure your trucks. So, legally you be fine.
I wonder if government allows it.
I bet it is better then 60k + if you are sure that you will drive safe. Then you will save a lot of money when you finish to do truck driving.
I am genius I know -
I wonder if an off shore insurance company is still acceptable!!! Lloyd’s of London comes to mind.

Edit: I was going to say that this young age is too young: not enough humbleness and patience but the fact the the op owns the the truck and trailer already, and sort of a business plan, that in itself gives him a lot of credit of confidence.Last edited: Feb 26, 2018

Oh well.
This is a business, not a hobby. Want to see rates go lower, get rid of crap drivers and cheap carriers.
All of you are acting like there isn't liabilities in this, put a truck on the road and let it get into an accident to see where the money and time to fix everything goes to.
My uncle owned a large fleet in Jackson Michigan, he taught me some of the business end of this and the first thing he taught me back in 1966 was to take me out to his yard and have me stand in front of his newest truck. He said look at it carefully, and think about what I am about to say to you. "That truck can kill a lot of people and do a lot of damage. When that truck l leave this yard, it costs me $1000 to make sure I can remain in business, because it is the insurance that forces me to remember that I can't take chances in business because luck only lasts for a moment."SL3406 and Broke Down 69 Thank this.
