I spent two years as a lease purchase driver for KLLM (of which I was VERY happy with). got off the truck last November to go back to school but I just cannot deal with the HO'MUNGOUS (my niece made up that word) paycut going from $1300/week down to $198/week. About to finish up my summer semester and am interested in coming back to CDL work.

I am open to relocation (though Texas would be preferred)
I have an Akita (so I either need a pet friendly outfit, or a home daily job. (No, Im not willing to give him up.)
I do not have my hazmat, but nothing is stopping me from acquiring it...
    (never got my tanker endorsement)
I have a clean MVR, no DUI's, and can only assume KLLM would give me a glowing recommendation.

Im trying to find out if oilfields would be a good fit for me.
I read one persons post (I am really hoping he was embellishing) where he talked about lightning storms, attempted truck jackers, bad cell coverage and freak alien abduction.... But SURELY that cannot be the normal...lol....

lots of info on oil field. just gotta look it up.....most crude oil companies wont hire you without prior crude exp. (from what i have seen anyway)....hubby got into crude without any exp because he has been driving almost 30 years.

dont let someone push you into working a lot of hours...there are jobs out here that pay good and dont require you to kill yourself.....getting your haz mat and tanker endorsements BEFORE you start applying would be in your favor..cuz haz mat doesnt happen over night...(back ground check etc....you have to wait for TSA to send you a letter saying you have been approved to obtain your haz mat)...HOWEVER.....if you are moving...it might be best to wait...i know when we came from TX to NM, we were able to transfer our haz mat, but i hear all states dont do that...

make sure you have housing lined up....housing IS NOT easy to come by, or cheap, in the oilfield....lots of fly by nights here. (companies)....try n do your homework before you come...

What's up with the Hazmat endorsement? I have an Arkansas license with hazmat, tanker, double/triples.

Will that not work down there? Or is it just that if you relocate, it can be a problem getting your license transferred?

I did read one job listing that specifically stated "TEXAS" CDL w/hazmat...kinda odd?

well like i said, we both had TX CDL's ...since they were able to verify our haz mat was still valid, they just transferred it....but if it had been expired we would had to have gone thru the whole process again (fingerprints etc) to get haz mat in NM

    Yep, I see now...I had it backwards..lol.

I'm just seeing some posts about different things related to being in TX with out of state license, etc. Kinda throwing flags up...ya know? :)

It is my understanding that most states will not transfer the hazmat endorsement. They want you to get another background check in their state before giving you the endorsement. It sound crazy to me since the same company does most of the background checks.

I met a few oil field drivers and owner operators in San Antonio a few weeks ago. They told me that while the money is good, it is basically a 7 day a week job. They usually don't drive more than 9 hours per day. That is so that they can be available to work 7 days a week. The ones to whom I spoke were paid a daily rate, even the owner operators. It didn't make any difference how many hours that they worked, they were paid the same rate, which was very good. Some days they may only work a couple of hours, but were still paid the same day rate. One driver lived in his truck. Another was planning on buying an RV to live in while he worked in the oil fields. The company has other locations than Texas. I think they have work in the Southeast and in Pennsylvania. According to the guys I spoke with, pay was better in Texas.

Well, that's a competely different schedule than anything I've heard of so far. I'm tempted to drive down and see what I can find out. My t/t experience is getting a little too much dust on it for the crude hauler companies. I'm likely going to wind up on a water truck...which is fine by me. I just want to get into the mix and be down there. I can find my way from that point.

My hubby came to Texas last October with a MN haz-mat and he had to do the whole process over. Well he just got it 3 wekks ago. He passed it right away but the background I guess took forever. He was pissed butoh well he has it now.

Yeah, seems really odd to me. The bad part is that, if I understand correctly, you actually have to show a physical address in TX to do that. That might be something I would consider in the future if the work holds out, but I would like to just get hired and get some work first.

Some of the job requirements I've seen actually state that you have to have a TX CDL to apply?
