hello all, I’ve been on the operations, procurement and management side of logistics for 15 years and I am ready to make a change in the next year or so. I’ve been doing some research and think I might do well as an owner operator with a cargo van/sprinter doing final mile. For those doing this correctly, what does the money look like and would you recommend it?

No the final mile is for freight that is small enough to be delivered quickly with a small box truck or a cargo van.

I would say it's really bad, never seen any one last. Too much competition

No, there is very little margin with the Amazon Delivery Partner service. They project $75k annual with 20 trucks. Not enough for me. I am looking at XPO (previously MDX), Select Express, Forward Air.

I agree about Amazon. I was going to argue against it but you are already looking past them. May I ask why last mile is what you are interested in?

It seems to be the best option for staying local and being home every night. I have a toddler. I’m just tired of being behind a desk for 10 hours a day, I love driving, love logistics and transportation. I also enjoy working in customer service and this would give me a chance to interface with customers in a way that over the road would not. I’m not looking to make a all the money, I’m really just looking to maintain my current income and don’t know if it is realistic.

The companies you have listed are really looking for small truck P&D. Would be local for sure. Think you may not like the reality of what you find. Best bet is find a few drivers doing this with the local terminals and talk to them. It can pay well, a lot of work with some odd hours in some situations.
Up early, like 4 AM, load truck, run routes, back at 4PM unload truck, go home.
