Do you know the tricks of paper logs? Have you ever been on paper? If the answer to both was no you want to stay on elogs. Not knowing how to cheat them could get you in tons of trouble if you slip up, including disqualification of your cdl. If it sounds appealing go for it but please dont come hear and say the mean government took your license for no reason.

Interesting. Just checked Comtrak's BASIC scores. HOS wasn't bad - 22% but 84.2% on Maintenance? :biggrin_2551: Stay clear of those trucks.

learning paper logs will be easy because i got like 6 people that own trucks that are related to me. and many of them owned their truck the minute they left cdl school. so yes you can be a newbie and do well. besides I do run legal I do go into violation here and there but traffic in chicago sucks. Shippers take forever sometimes and things happen. So ya i do go in violation. At least in paper logs I can push my hours back 2 or 1 just to get to where i wanna go. i mean i go into violation for like 5 min at most. but safety still eats me up on it.

If you are getting violations, you are not running legal. They are called violations for a reason.

I have been on elogs for over a year now and have yet to have a violation, and although I do not run Chicago often, I am in LA and New York on a regular basis. I have two drops on Long Island in the morning. I will make both of them on time with no violations.

It sounds like your bigger issue is your trip planning. Paper logs won't change that.

actually, doing intermodal and elogs is a serious pain, you run short of hours every day. Two of our competitors are on elogs, the guys run short of driving hours at least 3 times a week, they work 4 14 hour days. One driver was recently showing me printout for the previous week, he had 2 15 minute and 1 45 minute line 3 violations. Their systems are set to automatically switch from line 4 to line 3 at 15 mph, speed limit at the UPRR is 15 mph, 20 mph at the BNSF. He had a trip to Walmart, the 3 minutes he stopped at the gate to sign in, was not enough to stop line 3, thus when he start driving again to look for a trailer it kept him on line 3. Since I'm on paper, I can spend an entire 14 hour day in town, drive 200 miles, P&D 15 trailers, and never log more than 5 hours of driving time, and it's totally legal.
