What year Truck is it and what Cummins engine does it have in it?
If it has the Cummins ISX cm871 first thing I would be checking would be the EGR cooler.LeftEyeDaTruckr and KC Guardrail Thank this. -
Definitely the erg cooler, I've changed tons of those pieces of crap!
LeftEyeDaTruckr Thanks this. -
im sorry I don't know what kind of Cummins I believe isx but it's a 2010
-
Sounds just like an EGR pretty expensive job for a shop to do it too
-
EGR coolers on ISX's have a 100% failure rate. All they need to do is remove the EGR mixing pipe where it connects to the intake manifold and look for the signs. Any half decent truck mechanic out there should have done at least a hand full of ISX egr coolers by now. Very common repair procedure.

i drove a bran new 2013 pete for a while in the end of 2012- beginning of 2013 and it had the egr cooler replaced 3 times in the first 30k miles. by the 3rd one i knew the check engine light was going to come on for plugged egr about a week before it happened because the coolant level started dropping again.
