hey guys....i ran a search before posting and cant seem to find the answer, so heres the question. i am seriously considering buying a new 2012 international prostar with a maxxforce 15 engine. it will have an eaton fuller 18 speed tranny, specd at 1800 ft lbs torque, 500 horse, 14k front 46k rear. i saw some negative reports on 09 and 10 prostars, but cant find anything on 2012s. they still dont have urea tanks,so thats a good thing i think. the real reason i want it is because the bunk layout is as close to perfect as ive seen. gps in the dash, built in inverter...just a nice truck inside. what im wondering is who has one and what is good and bad about it? would you buy another?

    thanks

    dale

If what you're looking for in an interior is a high wattage inverter and and in dash GPS, you could get them installed on any truck you want for around $1000-$2000, depending on brands and labor, even if it is a model with multiplex wiring (not sure if IH has jumped on that bandwagon yet).

I agree that the interior is very well designed, though I've never driven one. I was given the choice of a 2011 by fleet assignment, but it had already been pretty lived in, and smelled horrible (I'm a non-smoker, so I'm picky). Ended up taking a 2010 pete instead.

I've only heard positive things about the maxxforce from shop foremen and technicians, but then again, it hasn't been around long enough to become a PITA in the service bay.

I drive a 2011. Love the truck but the MF 13 has been a problem. I hope the 15 is better.

This is the first year release of the Maxxforce 15. So far there are very few around. Can't say one way or the other if this engine is any better or not. All I know is I have been a mechanic for several years and any time a new engine comes out there is always issues with a first year release.

I drove an 09 Prostar with a Cummins ISX and a 9 speed... Wasn't a bad rig, and very few problems.

I cannot say good or bad as I've never even been in one, other than at MATS.
Only thing I have to ask is why such a new truck? Why not get one that doesn't have a DPF or need DEF. They'd be more affordable too.

Got my truck back Friday nite. Did 600 miles Saturday. Not very happy with the new program they flashed into it. Now Monday morning it's back on the hook to the dealer. This is getting old quick! Regen system problem again!

Not sure about the new 2012's but my 09 is a decent rig. Yes interior is a great layout. lots of storage, truck is super quiet with road noise. Half the time when I'm on the phone my buddies don't even know i'm on the road.

Suspension could be better, I went from a Columbia which was a much better ride than the prostar.

I've had many issue's with EGR and other random sensors. Also I've had issue's with the rear bunk heater giving off a bad odor when I run it.

    Hope this helps

new truck makes the most sense to me as time is money. i want to be working, not sitting in a shop for repairs. i know there will always be little things in any vehicle, but for the money it just makes sense. looking around for something decent for 8 months or so i found that what i would consider worth buying is getting too close to the price of new. to save any real money, then you are looking at million mile junkers. the math says that saving 40 thousand on a used on will be eaten up in just a few repairs. ill be making around 1500 a day give or take (gross of course) and couple with a 20000 repair bill, it wouldnt take much to make up the difference. and if you werent aware.....internationals dont have def yet....but do have dpf. ive been a pete with one for 2 years now, and if you understand how they work, they arent a problem.

for the rest of the comments...i guess ill find out. truck should be here next month with plenty of time to get rigged up for the season after breakup is done. i got the biggest bunk and laid out just like i wanted....another advantage to buying new.....i got to pick it all. ill throw up some pics when its here. thanks everyone for the help.
