internet OTR/gaming

I have my laptop with me and game some....when I have the time. Usually that time is about an hour before I go to bed and when I am on layover.

You can buy a power converter from Cobra specifically designed for laptops on the go. It comes with a little pouch to store it in, and an adaptor for airplane use. Just plug it into any 12 volt outlet (cigarette lighter socket) in the truck and there you go. I bought mine at Pilot and I have also seen them at Petro and TA. At the time it was cheapest at the Pilot. Probably can be found at Best Buy or Office Max. I can't remember the voltage on it but it is enough. It looks like a small, flat, black box. I'm at home right now but when I get out to the truck I'll take a look at it and update you on what the specific voltage is and model number.

As far as online gaming I use a wireless card from Sprint. I'm sure there is other options out there but Sprint works just fine for me. Before I bought the card I bought a years worth of TA's wifi but it sucked and of course you can only use it at the TA. With a wireless card from your cell provider you can use the internet any where you have a cell signal.

For me it is worth having the laptop on truck. It allows me to stay in touch wherever I am and I can use it to wind down after a long day on the road. I miss having it on the truck when I leave it at home.

 

Ill be getting a wireless card from Alltel. With my basic cell plan, they both will come out to about $100 monthly. Im having my house phone shut off to save the extra expense, and will use my cell as the main contact.

 

I am an online gamer myself. I was actually a GM on an MMO for a few years. I have therefore been looking at different wireless cards allot.

Make sure you get one that is unlimited. Many will say that they are, but if you read the fine print they limit you to 3 gigs or less a month.
I am pretty sure that at this point Sprint is the only one that is truly unlimited, but I cannot be sure without looking at the info, and that is in my truck.

It runs about 70 dollars a month, which is more than If I got it thru my cell provider by about 12 dollars a month. But the overage charges are really high if you are not paying attention. Plus the ones with limits also can cut you off if you are using too much bandwith with no warning, in which case you are stuck with a worthless card.

Read the fine print before signing. Online games will suck up 3 gigs a month in no time.

 

Sprint is TRULY "UNLIMITED".
I D/L a LOT of stuff, particularly when I purchase a new program, like I just bought Roxio Media Creator9. Three days after I bought and D/L it (using my Sprint Card), they released Media Creator10, and I bought and D/L it too.

 

I started a thread about this subject several days ago and didn't get this many hits. I am glad I found this one. The bandwidth limit is important. I was also wondering about the latency? Chromedome being part of an MMO you understand what I mean. Do you find good latency so very little lag?

That is no lie read and don't listen to anyone on who is unlimited. I had BellSouth (I think) as my home phone provider. Unlimited long distance calling up to 15,000 minute. Well we went over the minutes. My mom was sick and staying with us so, she had to call all her friends because I said it was unlimited. Daughter boyfriend lived out of state. So the minutes went quick. I didn't know it wasn't truly unlimited well we went over they sent us a letter and a bill for $50.00 and said each time would cost that.
They still call and would like for me to sign up with them and there unlimited service and I had to tell them to read their own fine print. Well they argued with me and I said ask your manager if it's not 15,000 minutes. He put me on hold came back and said sir you're right but it's unlimited up to the 15,000 minute. I said how is that UNLIMITED? So read the fine print because after I got the letter with the number if I had questions. Oh you can bet they will show you right were you can find it. I happen to have a pamphlet on them laying around I got through the mail looked at it sure enough there it was at the very bottom fine.

That is way I say don't listen to anyone on here or when you call to ask a question get someone with authority. With a cellphone you could owe hundreds or even thousands. How many people us 15,000 minute just like how many truckers stay online like a gamer will.

 

So at what speed are your downloads and uploads with the Sprint card?
Is it like a home modem or more like broadband.
I'd love to be able to game on the road in my downtime but I play Everquest 2 and am not sure the download rates are going to be adequate. I have a friend that is a full time RV'er and he uses satellite for both is TV and internet and he can play EQ2 without a problem.

Just interested in how the Sprint card vs. satellite compare.

Can anyone tell me WHERE to purchase a Sprint card like this? I am in Canada so guess I'm going to need a P.O. Box addy so I can get an American card and plan. In Canada, there is almost NO wifi like this - and the ones that offer it offer it in VERY small areas and for HUNDREDS of dollars per month - no unlimited at all.

I'd really appreciate any help in getting this as I am going to OTR with my hubby in the truck and I need to work, too, and need internet for that.

Hey all, if you need any advice on gambling, such as basic strategy, betting patterns, how to play, etc. I would be happy to field any questions.
