The TX one comes with a cab card, but since it is linked to your truck's VIN, they shouldn't have a problem pulling it up in their system. I'd still like to have the permit on hand, but you'd probably be OK.

Kentucky didn't give me any sort of certificate for their KYU number, but I still carry a copy of the letter just in case.

Nope, Texas will even sell you a 1 week intrastate permit.

Few require a copy in your possesion. Carrier is listed is all that matters. Most states don't bother you at all at the time you are loaded. They look at IFTA miles and determine if an audit is in order. Then they want to see all loads to match the miles run in that state. Thats when they find the intra you did(if any)

Say you have 500 miles in OR and 15000 miles in CA(no az or nv) CA is going to audit you.

KYU# is the Kentucky weight distance tax, not the intrastate authority.

Up here in Michigan (where our company is located) you have to have intrastate authority if picking/dropping within the state. Also need the MPSC# (in MI) on the truck to show you have the authority. I think its about a 3-6 month process to go through.

You definitely are supposed to have a TX DOT# to run intrastate TX but only know of one person ever caught in Texas without intra TX authority but it was a bad experience. If I remember correctly they wouldn't let the truck leave the scale until everything was in place. It only took til the next day but I think he got a pretty stout fine on top of having to register.

DOT auditor in Pennsylvania told me they require PA public utility commission (PUC) authority to operate intrastate -- even with interstate authority. Apparently it is not enforced because even the major trucking companies don't have intrastate authority here.

They pick and choose who they enforce it on. As a consultant I just finished helping a company in the Scranton area that does oil field and construction work, they thought they were exempt from PUC authority and the 1% of gross assessment that goes along with it but only part of their operations were in fact exempt. It could have been ugly but my client was let off fairly easy. Several states go after intrastate authority as a revenue stream, and states like NJ use it as a way to capture tax revenue they would otherwise miss. Right now the PA PUC is going after towing companies and auto auction transport companies. The towing companies are exempt when hauling disabled and wrecked vehicles for repair but not when doing a secondary tow (meaning from their repair shop to another shop or auction). They have not been enforcing on general freight companies often lately but their moods change frequently.

PA hit me with a 25,500.00 assessment in 2005. All over LTL pu's that were combined and shipped out of state. Each load had one stop in PA on the way out. By the time we were done the cost was less than 2000.00. They were basing on the total revenue of the load, not the portion that deliver in state.

The Pennsylvania PUC assessment should only be 1% of your gross transportation revenue generated by intrastate operations only, but they have a habit of including all revenue generated in the state even if it was on truly interstate loads. This is where you have to fight with their auditors. You did good with your final outcome.
