Cool. When you said the shop would install it kinda sounded like a soon thing not a later thing.

I really thought they had APU's but a quick check of their smartway info doesn't list any. I must have been thinking of Averitt. Or maybe a Lease Operator had one?

Seriously though make sure they put an inline breaker in. Even if you have to buy it. Not so much to protect the truck but your inverter and electronics as well. $30 insurance part can save a couple hundred.

    What is SmartWay????

I like to be on top of things and the Pilot TS have them on sale. The plan would be to have a mini fridge, and to run a small microwave.

I have a good trucker GPS, laminated Rand McNally Atlas too.

Yes the Truck Shop supplies the cables and the fuse to install the inverter too.

I am open to any tips.

the company setup has twin 50a fusses you can't change it if you want to KEEP YOUR JOB..! that is what THEY want and they install it for free. and the cables they use will run a 2500w they are big honkin wires

the setup they use also has a low voltage cut off (12.5 i think) so if the voltage gets low it will cut off the invertor

you (the driver) can't hook anything into the wiring NOTHING.....

i was on the fb page last week and they were talking about how they were thinking of cutting back on the invertors power from 1750w to 800w

I hope that they dont make any changes for a few weeks. I would like to get this into my truck before they make changes.

Yeah I guess some companies are just to big to be flexible. My old truck had a 125 Maxi fuse in the block but they let me put my breaker between the inverter and the fuse.

New truck they just moved my breaker over to the new truck and left off the fuses. You are correct though it's their truck you have to play by their rules.

800 watts isn't going to run a fridge or microwave:biggrin_25513:

they have been having issue with the batteries in the new 2012 trucks and some s o b thinks it may be using 1500w invertors....!

it's a good thing this is my truck so they can't say anything about my 1500w and 800w both hooked up

usx hooks the invertor right to the battery pac so it doesn't run thru the trucks electric system and the wiring they use is set up for fusses. btw if one fuse blows the 1500w invertor will still work but will only run about 900w. had it happen and took forever to find out why the mirco wouldn't work but the fidge was fine, thought it was the invertor was bad until i checked and found 1 fuse blew

the yellow inverters are power drive. i have the cobra 800 watt for my fridge. i had an older 500 watt roadpro that wasnt letting the fridge run. so i got this one and all is good.

i also have a 400 watt black and decker for my TV and playstation and digital tv tuner. i also have a 100 watt cig lighter inverter too.

on a side note, dont fall for one of those install kits at a truck stop. if you are allowed to install one yourself and have half a head on your shoulders, it is not that hard. i went to home depot, told them what i had, and they had a chart for 12 volt loads with amperage ratings. im sure you all have seen this chart. i got the wire, gas and oil resistant and the crimp connectors for hyst under 25 bucks. i measured so i knew how much wire i needed.

i then went to a car stereo warehouse and bought a 150 amp fuse as the cobra has a 1600 watt peak. the glass fuses only come in 60 amp sized here, that is why i had to go to one that was made for a car stereo amp. it cost me 20 bucks for the fuse and fuse block.

i then got the wire loom and ran the wires in the loom and taped it shut with elec tape every 18 inches or so. the loom was run through the grommet in the side box floor, ran the loom between the bed and trim in the sleeper, and there we go. perfect install, took me about 2 hours to run it all and tuck it away.

i run a drop cord to the truck when i am home to run the fridge so my stuff stays cold all the time. the entire install with the inverter was 195 bucks. not a bad deal when i was spending 2 bucks a day for a bag of ice. then i had the issue of a cooler in the way and having t drain it all the time.

the 2.7 cu foot black and decker freezer/fridge that walmart is selling now for 79 bucks runs on 72 watts after compressor startup. the startup is probably around 300 watts or so, but yes, a small dorm fridge will run fine on an 800 watt inverter.

the load is so small, the cooling fan on the inverter only comes on for the initial startup load for the compressor then it goes off.
