If that lady thinks steering with one hand is bad, she should see how good I can steer with one knee.

I was pulled over twice within the last week by law enforcement that claimed that I was using my smartphone while driving, I do not argue with law enforcement agents over such things but at the same time I can say with confidence that I was not doing what they claimed. I was actually ready to come into this thread to advocate for driver facing cameras in the sense that I would like to go back and watch a recording of my driving during the time in which they claimed I was doing whatever with my smartphone to show them that I wasn't and I would even go so far as going to court and countersuing for harassment.

Your post brings up and interesting thing that I've yet to consider, what if our devices either are or will be tracked in the in a way in which we can be targeted by law enforcement, AI, etc?

Thankfully I just got meaningless warnings from law enforcement for these supposed in fractions, the law enforcement agents simply ran my license and checked my truck, both encounters were less than 5 minutes each. Perhaps they're simply on the lookout for people who aren't properly licensed, insured, etc? I have had a handful of random pullovers and inspections before but I am always released without any consequence.

The cops can only see 2 things with regard to your phone.
    1. Your face/truck cab lit up by something like a phone/tablet/GPS/ELD.

    2. Driver looking at the light source & moving their head & hand as if the driver is manipulating "buttons" on the device.

If you don't want that big ticket don't be touching those devices while driving. I have a Bluetooth connected mini keyboard & mouse pad that can be put on my lap or held in the hand at lap level, if you can't go without touching your electronics.

YOUNGER & new drivers can be so comfortable constantly using the devices they forget the rules are stil in a 1980s world. Just because someone is comfortable breaking the 1980s rule you aren't protected from the big consequences. IIRC the fine for the driver can be up to $2500 & the penalty for the trucking company can be $10k. The ticket has almost as much impact on your career as a DUI or Rollover.

If you are going to break this rule you better do it like someone breaking into a casino vault.

When it comes to cell phones I think it’s simple just don’t while driving. If the text is so important people can call. Use the your headset. Wouldn’t use it in heavy traffic though. Or bad weather/ road conditions.

I got news for you. Your phone os, ie Android or iOS is tracking EVERYTHING you do. When your involved in a fatality or serious enough accident someday your phone will become evidence and discoverable in court. I certainly wouldn't want to be on record as inputting data via bluetooth at the time you were driving.

I know Apple (iOS) was at least trying to fight the good fight and keep the governments prying eyes out of our personal lives but i think Chinerzs got to them and wants to know everything. I know the Feds still have to use an Israeli software companies tools to decrypt certain Apple devices they encounter at the TSA (corporate espionage, state spying etc) and the Patriot Act gives law enforcement broad powers to pretty much do whatever they want to.

I Don't recommend anyone use the phone while driving. I never said it was safe or wouldn't be discovered before court if there is an accident.

The phone using drivers think if they tell the cop "did not" before getting a phone ticket they won't get the ticket. It's not true. If you are going to break the rules you can or may pay the consequencess for it. Not everyway you can break the rule attracts as much notice as any other way. Do what you want. Face the consequences.
