I was stopped by a Iowa DOT gal on Wednesday for a paper work check. She came up to the passenger side door and first thing she said was "you did nothing wrong". Of course not, I am thinking, wish my wife would say the same thing sometimes. She says bring all your paperwork back to the car. Now, big problem, I can't find the container for the registration on the trailer. Call the boss and find out it's on the inside of the frame, surprise, surprise, never thought to look there. Guess you are never too old to learn something new.
Now back to her car and she inspects the registration and says, " this is just the application for the registration". OOPS... It sure didn't look like anything we get in Kansas, but it was from Minnesota so what do I know? Anyway she writes up the report and puts under violations, no registration card for trailer. Well crap, I say. She was very nice about it and I was my usual pleasant self and off I went.
I got home and gave the boss the "offending papers" and the phone lines are lit up between our shop and HQ and low and behold, I did have the right paperwork for the trailer. Well, dang it all, now what???? Oh well, guess I'll let the guys at HQ go about fixing it.
Mistakes do happen, just hope they can be undone.

I have had the same problem. Didn't get cited but in Texas when your register a trailer the first time the receipt they give you says "Title Application Receipt". Had a confused officer tell me that was not a registration even though it was.

How can you pretrip without checking the registrations ???
ECU51 Thanks this. -
LOL! Few years ago, an acquaintance working for the same company was pulled over in Iowa by a female DOT officer. She did an inspection and it turned out good. Before leaving he asked, "Wait a minute, where's my window sticker"?
Ms DOT says, "I'm not really qualified to issue the stickers"... at this point the driver freaks... Driver says, "WHAT? If your not qualified to issue stickers, how the heII can you be qualified to inspect my truck"? LOL!
Your company(you?) may have to go to court in Iowa to clear this up. I wonder if they would start chargeing the DOT officers the same fines(as the issued ticket, out of their pocket) for mistakes they make, would the mistakes cease. hmmm?Last edited: Feb 26, 2012

ummm, your talking about a dot officer. aren't they classified as govt workers. at the state level since they work for there particular state and not the actual govt.
and we all know that the govt really has no brains. and it's been showing really well during the obama administration. -

Wow.........
really...........? -
I have had a cop tell me I had expired tags on my car.
when I told him he needed to look again, he was rather surprised to see current tags.
And that nice "receipt" the lady from the IA DOT said is not a valid registration? It's what saved my butt from getting a nice ticket.
Found out there are two ways to "register" a vehicle. If the registrar's office does it in the computer. The system updates in about a month.
If the registrar forces the registration, which is what happened in my case, it can by up to 6 months or more before it updates in the computer.
Guess what the officers go off of? -
