Yep, the 4 applications I've paid for have been used a total of 5 times, all within the first day. For me, it seems the $.99 to $4.99 purchase price makes it a bit too easy to not evaluate the need rather than simply hit "buy". The ones I use the most are the free ones, and very few of those. Many seem to be novelties at best.

My BIL showed us his app that turns the phone into a mug of beer. Then you tip the phone like you are drinking the beer, and the beer slowly drains out. Cracked us up.

Sol free, The Weather Channel, Pandora, Public Radio, Fast Shop, Streaks, Golf Mate, FindMe18 are some of my most used. Streaks is the only one that wasn't free.
I have a few free location based apps that I used whenever I have some free time in a new town or just simply don't want truck stop food. Each has it's own strong points and weaknesses but together they work well. They are: iWant, Nearby, ManGo, AroundMe and UrbanSpoon. Taxi is also great for when I've walked too far to a bar and don't want to walk back.
