The company that I pay to file my IFTA and and IRP just told me that they didn't file the Heavy vehicle tax form 2290 for me, last year. I didn't know about this, as I was paying them to do all my permits and paperwork associated with my business. For 80K Lbs. it is $550 per year. Is this usually done at tax time in April? When do some of you file this form and pay this tax? What will be the penalty, if any, for me not filing last year? Is this something they ever check at Port of Entry or during truck inspections?

You must present proof of the tax being paid when you renew your registration. The penalty for paying late is a couple hundred bucks
-
It comes due July or August. Late fee will be a percentage based on how late. Wouldn't think a couple hundred.

Yeh don't be surprised if it's $740

i'm surprised the irs didn't notify dot to have you shut down at the scale for not paying up. LOL
