Here in Phenix City Alabama I have a 3 bed room,1 bath, den and 2 car garage with 2 acres of land my rent is 650 a month! The main reason I don't return to NC is my wife is very sick and the Doctors have been great in getting her better, She has been taken off insulin but is now using a machine at night to help with her breathing! I thought the pay was a little low but some extra money coming in will help us even 400 a week is a big help now, plus any overtime I can get, I think the lady at the job said it was for 90 days at that rate, I will check tomorrow to be sure, thought I would use the time to strengthen my skills since I haven't driven since 1995!!!!! I am more concerned with Janis's health right now, I really hope to get back on the road when her condition gets better GOD willing!

While I hate to say it, those saying the south generally pays a lot less (in more rural areas anyway) are generally spot-on. Especially for someone just getting their CDL back after almost 20 years like the OP. I make considerably more than $10/hr driving local here, but it's still not $30/hr. I also get OT after 40 (generally get about 55-60 hrs. a week), hauling dedicated OSOW for a local company, so that helps quite a bit. That said, we are one of the higher paying gigs in the area. That's with close to 20 accident free and clean MVR years.
OTOH- I am in my own home every night (just a tad over 2300 sq. ft.), on almost 5 acres of land, and my monthly mortgage payment is just over $600, homeowners insurance included. And lastly, I doubt many OTR guys can go right outside their back door on any given night and practice with a selected member (or 3) of their arsenal on their own private firing range. I can and do.

ETA- Good luck OP, and God bless!

You've got ABF, Saia and OFDL right in town.

Go work the docks at one of those places or become a local driver for them.
You'll surely earn wayyy more than $10.

    $10.00 an hour sounds justified.
Break down per hours in a truck for Company driver OTR a week ( including sleeping ) Sounds right. Don't forget that awesome requesting to be home too :D
