Wow! You covered every point of what most of the major trucking companies have done wrong in the last years. Prior to the economic slow down, the DOT was inacting the emission crap for trucks. So companies got in the pre-emission rush. Then the zero tolerance idle law of places like CA and NY AND then the price of fuel went out of the roof. Then came the rush to APUs. The last nail was the slow down of frieght.

I've noticed lots of used truck lots have the same trucks sitting there that they had 12 months ago. It's like whats left of the new car dealers. In Nashville, one Ford dealer has 2 dozen 1999 F250s and F350 sitting there with 0 miles. They can't sell them anywhere close to invoice price. Each month the dealer pays a floor plan payment on the units.

The only point you made that I can't agree with is that trucking companies need to fill every truck. They don't need to, but they will and like you said, have it sit 70% (or more) of the time. That driver quits and they replace them with another unsuspecting driver. Why? Because they don't know better or they are desperate.

Most of the mega companies are afraid to be caught without trucks and trailer to support there customer base when things pick up. They are worried that if they have to tell a customer it will take 1 to 3 months to build a fleet back up, they will loose the customer.

The people I'm leased to have quite a few new units sitting, just waiting.

See they get lucky and do not have to start paying for them untill they are put in service..

Pre ordered to avoid new EPA rules..

Then when things pick up, like other poster stated they have the trks.

Now we also have a yard full of new trls..
    Pre ordered before the crash.
They wanted to back out of order, but trailer company said you ordered you buy...

They sent a bunch out to former Arrow shippers..
But we still have a yard full the last time I was therre at the end of Dec..

They would give it to you if they had the freight. You cannot run the freight, pay for fuel, pay the driver, an then pay for expenses for the truck, itemsin the office, office help, etc and expect to turn a profit with what is being paid right now.

It's the economy. It won't get better for a while.

A smart company will stay ahead of this economic curve if they can. It's hard to do right now since they are probably losing money. At the same time a few companies are buying trucks because Freightliner/Volvo are practically giving them away. They have many new trucks as well that need to be sold. BTW- Mark,I'm also a Lehigh Valley driver currently doing the local gig.

The mega companies would rather give you 2000 to 2500 miles a week, then cut the fleet and be caught flat footed when the freight picks up. As long as they are covering the cost of fleet they don't care about the drivers.
