International and Cat are partnered up. On top of that International and Mann have a 2010 emissions partnership. I've heard of 3 different configuations that Naivstar has been playing with:
a) 100% MaxxForce
b) C15 block, MaxxForce intake, aftertreatment, and engine controller
c) MaxxForce/Mann hybrid.
Who knows what they're going to release come Jan 1st but there is a chance that it'll be a Cat/Navistar/Mann thing.
is 2009 the last year for CAT engines?

Ok so i have a question reguarding all this CAT engine stuff. Since you can only get a CAT or CUMMINS in a peterbilty and KW are they now only going to offer soly the CUMMINS engine? Not many choices there huh? Do yall ever think that the Detroit will come back to Pete and KW?

Its only a 13L but they're working on bringing over the DAF MX engine:

We've had our new Detroit DD15 running for over a year now. All I can say is wow. What a great engine. The fuel economy is way better than anything we have....ISX included. The power is so much better than the Series60s we ran for years.
It's a new world for truck engines and Cat understood that and decided not to sink any more money in an already crowded field. Probably smart for all involved. Whatever it is they do with Navistar will probably be a challenge to pull off. DD, Cummins, and Volvo are leaving the others in the dust. Paccar may have a shot in the future but even that will be tough.
We're considering what to buy for the future and although we will keep our options open for the Paccar engine, the Detroit Diesel DD15 and DD13 are far and away the best we've run lately. -
Isn't Paccar in cooperattion with Cummins?

I've got a cousin who works at a KW dealer as a technician. He was saying that truck engines are about 5% of CAT's production and 95% of their warranty claims. With this information at hand, I can't blame them for leaving the truck market. I would too.
Most of what he's seeing are the Cummins ISX engines. I will say he used to prefer CAT engines, but after doing all the warranty work, he recommends the ISX. -
This is such a subjective thing it's not even funny. My favorite truck to drive EVER was a Western Star 4900EX with a 12.7 500 S-60 Detroit. It didn't pull the best, but I swear on a stack of Bibles that truck averaged 7.4 mpg pulling average gross weight of 72,000 lbs. I've also driven a 379 with the same powertrain, and got very similar results.
My next favorite was a 379 with an 475 ACERT CAT. It fought to get 5.8 mpg, but I would not hesitate to buy one and mod it as long as it doesn't have a DPF. I know of at least one guy locally with a C-15 ACERT getting over 6.5.
As far as I know, the MaxxForce 15 is basically a C-15 block with Navistar's stuff hung on it. If they do it right, it should be very reliable, but probably not exactly what you'd call a frugal engine in terms of fuel mileage.
This is not exactly on topic, but the new emissions regs have hurt the performance, reliability, and fuel mileage of EVERY truck engine out there. If I had my choice, I'd grab a 379 Pete with a 12.7 DDEC-IV Detroit and watch the money roll in. Sadly, they haven't been offered since '03, and the company I work for has that stupid 5 years old or newer rule. -
