I have a 53' spread axle moving van that I fill to the doors quite frequently. The Axles are fixed. I am based out of California and never have had a problem. 90% of our fleet are spread axles.
-
Check your setbacks. What is the kingpin to rear axle distance? Moving vans run light and may be 40ft?
-
Light? Lmao. Mine is actually a 53' high cube step deck climate trailer my empty wt is 50,550 lbs loaded I'm always around 79K. I haul special commodities. I have not had a chance to measure the length to the rear axle but it is forward of my lift gate by 2 feet so I'm assuming It is around the 46'markHegemeister Thanks this.

Don't know why but people always think moving vans are light. Lol. Yes when I was a mover we would haul 20-24K lbs but the van itself is heavy. Many a mover has gotten an over weight ticket
Hegemeister Thanks this. -
@kylefitzy if ya gonna quote me get all of them
No I don''t hang out at scales. You can see tons of scale drama while being in line or being sent inside for a level 1.
Also show me where this spread axle is gonna slide. Being as it's a fixed spread
You can't slide a fixed spread axle flatbed. I've been pulled over by young DOT cops and cited. Then other times, waved along by senior DOT.
Good luck in your job trucking....johndeere4020 Thanks this. -
I guess you missed the part where the law being discussed, KPRA, only applies to trailers OVER 48' long? Just because a trailer can't be reconfigured doesn't make it legal. Just ask the guys pulling 53 foot rgns with the axles set at the rear. Someone here got turned around in CT and got a 750 ticket.
-
I realize the KPRA law. It's just that cops have a hard-on for the 40' anywhere. Most if not all vans or refers have that stupid sticker on the side to point out where 40' is on that specific trailer. Why direct attention for a couple inches being off. To be legal on weight.
Ya the 7 axle and bigger have tons of issues going places with having to be permitted. @Rontonio @superhauler know all to well on the RGN legal aspects. But 53' is an issue that cops will exploit. No matter if the driver is trying to be axle weight lega, it can sometimes pit his KPRA out past 40'
