Hi all, I'm trying to get my CDL with in-company training, I would really like with either Swift or Schneider, according to what I've researched. My only concern is with a charge on my record from 3 years ago- I had a DUI reduced to a "negligent operation." I don't drink at all anymore- haven't since that time in my life, and I very much want to drive truck for one of these companies. I live in CA now, the charge was in Vermont. Is it too much for them to even consider me? What do you think?

I have not heard of any state reducing a DUI charge. My guess is that it will depend on what your MVR says. If they do a criminal background check then it could still show up as a DUI. My suggestion is to go to your local sheriff's office or police station and get a criminal background printout on yourself. I would also pull a copy of your MVR and see what shows up. If anything shows up as a DUI it will usually be a minimum of 5 years before most carriers will hire you. Many want at least 10 years after conviction. Still others won't consider anyone who has had a DUI. Once you see what is on your record you can call some carriers and see what they say. Each carrier has their own policy concerning hiring.
