I've never driven a taxi cab before but have an understanding of how it works. To some independent drivers it means you can work your own hours. You pay the cab company anywhere from $250-$350 a week in dues (this includes insurance, car maintenance, dispatching, etc). You pay for your own gas. I heard of drivers doing a 12 hour shift making anywhere from $250-$350 a day, sometimes more if experienced and depending on area. So pretty much a day's worth of work can pay off your week's dues.
Now a different company is asking for 50/50 split. This means there are no weekly dues but you pay the company half of what you make for the day. This might favor both sides depending if it's a slow day. If I make $200 a day, I give the company $100. Just in case if it's a slow week then I won't have to pay dues. Some drivers make money some don't depending on skills and assertiveness. I just want to hear opinions regarding this matter. I'm trying to work as a taxi cab driver so I can have that flexibility of working on my CDL license. My current job delivering pizzas usually requires me to be there on time, etc. plus relying on tips just isn't doing it for me. Some people tip and some don't.
is a 50/50 split better than paying weekly dues when driving a taxi cab?

Depending on your age and record I know a few people that own there own taxi company with two taxi's. they pay 500 a month for insurance and they run late 90's civics so upkeep isn't that much. He only works on the weekends and makes probably 300 a night after fuel.
all he said he had to do was get them to pass taxi cab inspection and have insurance for it. I didn't get too into everything needed but it didn't seem that hard at all. -
I drove a cab in '79/'80 in the L.A. area just to make grocery money while going to broadcast school and needed flexable hours. I could choose between a daily lease ($35 a day) or the 50/50 split. First day, 50/50 split, second day, $35 lease and I kept the rest. The lease was the way to go, made much more money. This was a 12 hr shift, shared cab. But, I gotta say, being a cab driver really won't help you in the trucking arena.
