We had a CB back in the 70's. Lived in AR and people in the sticks used them all the time, we also had a base station; it was cheaper than paying long distance phone charges.
There is nothing like listening to someone on the CB playing harmonica at 3am in the morning. Husband was not a trucker then, we just made trips back to IN to visit grandma with our son whenever we could.
Moved back to Gary, IN area in 78. The radio could not be kept on with a 3yr old in the car then, there was too much cussing, fighting, and trash talk, so it went off.
CB's are a tool that some shippers still use if you want to be called to a dock. Yes it is a pain having to listen to the thing when you want to sleep, but that is the way it goes.
A lot more wrecks are caused by secondary wrecks, before the cops even show up. If everyone had their radio on, it sure does help like many have stated, to warn you of a situation.
Husband had his radio on last night, someone warned another driver that his underneath storage door was cracked open on the truck.
Now if only truckers would learn to use it and quit getting in so many fights and feuds.
Is a CB Radio really necessary to have?
