We are looking at an older Freightliner that looks to be in fairly nice shape, 1997, it has a Cummins M11E engine in it set at 400hp with a 13spd, it has just over 500,000 kms on it and we can pick it up for around $12,000 Canadian, justg wondering if the M11 is a good engine or should i stay away from it, will it be ok for pulling grain from field to elevator as a second truck, will be pulling around 90,000 lbs loaded from the field, thanks for any advice you can give me.
Is a Cummins M11E OK

Sound a little gutless for that much weight. I drive a C13 Caterpillar with a 13 speed # 430 HP, 1750 FP torque and I think this is gutless.
-
for that much weight, you better find something else. Like the other hand said look at a cat if you are going to gross 90,000. M11s are ok if you dont put too much weight on them. You dont want to put more than 72000 on one. Just my opinion.

We used to move that much weight with an older 350 Cummins Big Cam 3, it always pulled good. Is there that much of a difference between a Big Cam engine and the M11E? Like i said its only going to be a second truck and wouldn't be doing all the hard work. Would it be too hard on the M11 or damage it or just be a lot slower to get me from A to B? Again thanks for the replies.

As a second truck doing what you want to do it will be fine. -
In 1994 the company I retired with, started gradually switching from N-14s, to M-11s (the old lighter weight, more payload argument). Drivers did a lot of complaining, but they're still running the same versions of that motor today- ISMs, I think;
Rated at 330hp pulling tridem trailers which allow a GVW of 84,000 or 86,000 (can't remember) on state highways. 500,000 mi. was the trade off goal, however some went to 750,000 because of the timeline on the lease. The type of service these trucks were in really abused them, lots of gravel roads, start and stop, handling by drivers who were paid by the mile.
They did the job, but not without casualties. Injectors, lots of turbo failures, blowing engine oil out the stack, and the 750,000 mi. engines were just plain wore out. Apparently the company is satisfied with their service, and reduced trade in value, because as I stated before, they're still running the small block Cummins. -
Like 830 said it will be fine, not like you are going to run it 2000 miles grossing that much weight anyway. Im sure the 400hp M11 will out pull a 350hp big cam, the big cam only had 1250lb of torque.

The m11 can't be much smaller than a C-12 Cat. we had drivers comming out of wheat feilds at 96,000 with C-12s with 9 and 10 speeds. Im sure an m11 could do it fine.
-
It should be fine just don't push it so hard that you overheat it, the 13 speed would be a good deal if it isn't geared too tall.
-
M11s are okay for what they are. Ran one for quite a while in a co. truck. Didn't much care for it, but, then, I ran a ton of mountain passes with it. I think for what you intend to use it for, it will be fine.
