I was researching and it appears to be that a post-trip action is not required to be logged, but a post trip account of all issues observed during the days operations are required to be logged in a DIVR. So no time requirement, only reporting.
Is a post trip inspection officially required by D.O.T.?

Now that is only a requirement if there is a dvir. It's not required anymore.Toomanybikes Thanks this. -

Clarity to dvir’s. Only when defects are found. FMCSA Rescinds “No Defect” DVIR Rule For Motor Carriers of Property - Cold Connection

Forget the FMCSA, the states and the carriers and their rules. I have took note over the years at how much money has been paid out in costly repairs and to settle lawsuits. You can take this anyway you want. If you get behind the wheel of a CMV and have not at least looked around for air leaks, liquid leaks, tires, lights out or having some jackleg pulling a 5th wheel pin or something else to your rig your an imbecile. One of the things that separates a professional driver from a steering wheel holder is they don't need some regulation to stay safe, they stay safe out of a mindset. I have sit in truck stops and watched drivers get up go walk inside get some coffee etc get in their truck and start driving. This has always made me shake my head. This is why I can't really understand these kinds of questions.

do not go on duty for your pre/post trip, add a vehicle inspection to fueling or load/unload. Requirement is a 15 minute inspect sometime during the day, time can be combined with other duties, this saves you the 15 minutes dedicated to pre/post insp. I have been doing it this way for years.

Ok, fist is you are working, so go on duty.
Second there is no time requirement for any inspection. It's log it as you do it.
Third, there is no actual requirement to inspect the vehicle. You just have to be satisfied everything is working. Heck you can have someone check the truck out, as long as you are satisfied with them. -
This is why almost all the carriers have orientations for new hires. At some point they should hold a log class. This pretrip thing is primarily a carrer requirement.

Your whole shift is a inspection, first is a inspection of safety requirements along with all mechanical aspects of combination. The rest of the time is spent every stop checking lights, tires ,leaks everytime leaving and approaching. At end of day a final check, tires, leaks, lights so no surprises in next shift.. You can note all those inspections if you want, the only thing you have to note is if any defects and any time spent over 7.5 minutes to do duty.
