Is a trucking career right for me?

I have tinnitus and some hearing loss. Only time it really bothers me is when I am in a setting with a lot of background noise. I think I would vote for going to college.
Just a minute I think my phone is ringing, never mind, it's my wife

If you are going into a STEM field or something similar that you are legitimately interested in that's going to be in demand for several years and pays well then go the college route. If you have no idea what you want to do being 33 years old and know your most likely just going to end up with a liberal arts degree in something like underwater basket weaving then you should considering going to trucking school and giving it a shot. As far as autonomous trucks go I would be far more concerned about getting a good paying job at 33 years old than a potential loss of said job at some unknown time in decades into the future.

 

well at least one person should put in a different perspective for you huh? I wanted to drive from a very early age. everyone in my family wanted me to go to college. life is so much betetr that way.
joined the military and got to drive howitzers than got to drive trucks 2 1/2 and 5 tons etc.
got out and roamed around a bit. got a job driving a '71 pete with a flat bed. loved it!! got recalled to military so had to leave the job.
got out agian and decided to work local because of kids.
finally used the college fund and went to school. everyone in my family is happy happy happy. Oh I have finally grown up and gotten a real job. etc
money is good, people thinking your job must be great is alright, college was actually fun.

there are two things that I deal with every single day.

first - I wish like hell i was driving. I check out every truck I pass.

second - everyday I wonder if my job will end that day. businesses are cyclical at best. layoffs happen regularly. I have been lucky in this business. only laid off once. used the time off to go drive a dumper for a bit.

if you are worried about self driving trucks making you lose your job, wait until you have a few years in an office and realize kids coming out of school will do your job faster, longer and for way less money. then add a little economic instability to your company and you will be almost suicidal thinking about how to keep employed.

we have had 3 guys taken out of our office this month with heart attacks.

white collar jobs aren't always all they're cracked up to be.

 

One thing everyone is missing & I did too cause many of us were focused on the tinnitus issues ... is what would you study if you went to college? Some degrees can get you nowhere if you say major in art; then others like engineering or computers will pay you handsomely afterward.
