For every person that says 'I work for ## company and I made 200k my first year out of training' there is another person that says 'I worked for the same company and I made 20k my first year so I quit' my husband and I are looking to make good good money. We are just starting school and are located in central Florida. We want to team drive. We don't want to be shafted or confused by our paychecks. We want a fist company. I know it's not all going to be peaches and roses. But there are some serious horror stories out there. This is a huge step for us as we are not happy with our situation at all. We have really good work morals and safety morals. We make about 70k right now and would really like to make more. We want to stay gone fr as long as possible. Recruiters apparently lie. School recommendations have been purchased. We need real help. What do we look for? What questions can I ask the recruiters to determine if it's a decent company? Who will keep us busy? When is the 'good busy season' and when is the 'slow season?'
HELP!!
Is anybody REALLY happy?

This industry is now full of people who for one reason or another have found themselves out of work in their chosen fields of endeavor and come to trucking to make the big bucks and live happily ever after.
Some get into it because they have a love for this ( me) a wanderlust and got into it for that reason. The money was secondary to how the job made ( and still makes ) me feel. I've had great years and not so great years.
You say as a couple you bring in 70,000 a year now but want to make more. So is it chasing the dollar you're looking to do. Good luck with that.
There is money to be made with the right attitude and some luck. Oh and Hard work and due diligence.Sam Hell, tnt440, Quietbreeze and 1 other person Thank this. -
i agree with the post above, if you get into to wander/travel about, you are likely to be happy. If you get into it for money, then start planning what is going to be next cuz you are likely to be unhappy.
fr8monkey and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -

I agree also. My wife and I like it. We make decent money right now. It is plenty of work to make more than you have been.

You will probably want to haul refrigerated freight. It often travels long distances and is always looking for more teams to haul food that has to go-go-go. You will probably have to start with one of the larger companies due to both drivers being new and that brings insurance issues for the carrier. You may try starting with CR England, Prime, Shaeffer, even Schneider (dry freight) to name a few.
I would highly recommend staying away from any of the leases or ANY deal a company will float out there to you about owning your own truck. If you really desire your own truck later, there are plenty of threads on here about that. Just please don't jump into any ownership without reading all you can find on here first!!! -
I think j3411 made a good point. The money will come I made plenty but you have to love and I mean love this job. Its not exactly a job but some have different perspectives on that. I for one cant get away from it, I love it so much. Every time I leave I go right back. Im currently leaving a union job making 100k a yr because I hate it. Everyone is different though.

In any trucking company ...There are going to be drivers that are making good money and getting good runs...And just the opposite.....What you need to look at is how many are in each camp...What %....
Just remember to consider the source...Am I the Boss's Son in law....I just could have a different career path than you....Am I a guy that says he has been screwed by every company that I EVER WORKED FOR!...Probably not happy here ...
Often the job is what you make it...If there is freight... the boss should love drivers and teams that WILL RUN....If you prove yourself they should give all the miles that you can handle...(That's how they make their money after all)....If you need to be home...make sure your Company is good with that.....If They Want You To Run...And You Want To Come Home.....You won't fit...
Fact of life....Often glossed over by Recruiters and Schools.....At Some Point You Are Actually Going To Have Drive The Truck!.....I don't care how the pay is figured....You Will Not make Much Money...Unless You Run Hard.....
Yes there are people who are making good money and like the job....jamesd503 Thanks this. -
Have they talked to you about the training period?
Most companies require the husband and wife to train seperately.
This means he'll be out with a trainer for 5 weeks and you'll be out with a female trainer for 5 weeks (if you mind being with a strange male).
Once both your training periods are over you can run team.
There is a catch in that female trainers are rare and you may have to wait a few weeks or more while he's already begun.
So it might be a couple of months before you see each other and hook up.
It's not always like this, but pretty typical.
There are companies, like CRST that love married teams.TRKRSHONEY Thanks this.
