Is better it rebuild a rear end or buy a reman

Out of all the shops I've ever been to, I have never had the owner throw me the keys to his pickup. His guys were fast, prices were reasonable, and the downtime was only 1.5 hours! If any of you owner ops out there live near there and need a good, trustworthy shop to be your go to place that you can trust to do you and your rig right, I will swear by Old Mel.

 

Lost a trans once pulling out of the MD scales. Limped to his shop, in a day and half had me up and running. And that pickup had some hinky steering on it when I drove it !!

 

It's like snowwy said, a rebuild and re-manufacture is basically the same thing.

You can get the 'reman dif' for $1250. Would it be more than another $1000 to have it installed?
Just wondering how much of that $2500 the local guy is charging for rebuilding the diff and installing it, and how much it would cost if you brought the unit to a shop to have it installed.

 

That must have been before you went to the 22918B. I thought I had transmission problems and told them what I had they told me that they had never seen one. Sure was glad it was the diff instead.

I know what I did...I cooked the diff. Hot day, lots of hill climbing and the truck was pulling like a champ. Wont make that mistake again.

 

Yep, 189 18spd. In a previous truck. I was like you could of swore it was a rear. Old Mel climbed on the back of my truck and said let's go!! Drove up and down that road they are on with him Hangin on the back to see where the noise was coming from. LOL OLE MEL HAS A SET OF BIG ONES !

 

I'm glad you told me his name. I havent been back through there, but when I hear anyone I know is going through there, I tell them about my experience. Expected to get reamed out and got the red carpet treatment instead.

 

I won't swear by it. But i think they can be rebuilt without dismantling from the frame. Whereas, a new or rebuild would have to be removed and replaced.

Don't know what the difference would be in labor between the 2 methods. So labor might be 6's either way.

 

A rear diff may run you 1250 if you’re lucky. When I replaced my front with a Welker reman it was 2500, and just replaced it again last week (warranty) along with the rear with cost 1600.
