So I see alot of posts from students and rookie drivers but what about you 20+ year guys,is Crete someplace that a smart driver can get some miles and make some money? By smart I mean a driver that runs his truck like it's his own business. Will time management, proper communication, discipline and everything else I have learned in 20+ years be a benefit or a curse?

My application has been approved and they want to get me set up for orientation. This will be my first time running 48 in over 17 years, been out west doing my thing but I am kind of looking forward to running all 48 again. Any idea where a driver from So Cal would be doing orientation? So many questions, its tough being the new guy after all these years but I do know how to be a good new guy.

My opinion? NO. I'm not getting decent miles. Crete is a pain in the butt to work for, and is getting worse. Communication? Good luck. That's a serious problem at Crete. Have a question about a load they 'offer'? Be prepared to wait an hour, or longer. You run a 50/50 chance the load offer will be cancelled, and a worse one offered in it's place, or by the time they answer you, you don't have hours left to pick up the load.

Be prepared to waste a lot of time on the road getting the truck serviced, since you live nowhere near a terminal with a shop.

Oh it sounds just dandy. Looks like I havent missed much. There are some other options and I expect a few more but Im getting more turn downs than I expected. There is Gordon running 11 western and an O/O with a UPS contract running LA to Atlanta may be solo may be team. CRST wanted me to run with a trainer for three weeks because I have not run 16 states in years. My response was are you for real,Ive got 20 years and 2,000,000 miles with just one or two very minor equipment damage incidents in my past.

Im trying to take this as a humbling experience but I can only go so low. I know to get past this little rough spot in what was a spotless career I need to just get something to help me put together 6-12 months of good work history. After that if not sooner I hope to get another teamster job. But then again if it works out I may hang around who knows at this point. Thanks OFTOTR

I haven't driven for Crete in about 4 1/2yrs so I couldn't tell you what it has become, but when I started there I lived in California myself and drove for them for almost 6 yrs, it was a good job...and in fact my experience with the year on their then mid-south regional was probably my best all time trucking experience....I just wanted to do some local work and home every night, so made the switch. I know the T.M. in Utah which is where I was based out of is still the same, and I enjoyed working with her and her staff and if I were to want to be a company driver going 48 again I would certainly go back to Crete and being based in that terminal. Others might not agree, but as I do my job and try not to complain, I had no real problems with communication etc. Good luck to you :)

My experience is if you just do your job, you won't hear much from their end. I rarely talk to my terminal manager more than once a month and that was just to set up my home time and #### chat a little. Since they went to the asset manager system, I don't talk to him at all. I thought the western drivers had to stay out longer than the rest of us, not sure. The pay is better than most of the similar type companies. My checks are never less than $1000/week, although I stay out at least 21 days. I hear from drivers that have problems, but as a whole there are a lot worse places to be. I live in Iowa, so it's easy to get home, being on either end of the country probably makes home time more difficult, I've only got home late one time in 4 years. No job is perfect, but this one works pretty well for me.

Its funny how guys that have some time in can offer such a different perspective. Of course I like to hear from the rookies because they offer an opinion that is driven more by thier day to day observations of a job that is unlike anything else they have done.

Lets face it there are guys that are paid 100k a year to be a steering wheel holder and they still have complaints. Then on the other hand there are those that learn to work with what they have and manage to do very well even as others around them struggle. Learning how a particular system works then taking full advantage of what that system offers is what can make a less than desireable situation better.

Reading thru these threads I can see that Crete has a large group of satisfied drivers and far less complaints than some of the other comperable companies.

I think you'll notice the turnover has increased dramatically the last few years. It's not in any way the 'worst' job. it's far from the best, also. Crete is not the same company it used to be. As far as talking to anybody at my home terminal, I rarely do, also. The problem is you are stuck dealing with whoever answers the phone or qcom in Lincoln more than 50% of the time, and the person who eventually answers you has no authority or desire to change anything, or even understand the question you are asking.
I've worked with plenty of companies where some people are happy, some people are not. I don't expect to have my ### kissed and be handed money for nothing. I'm willing to work, but don't appreciate my time being wasted.

Sometimes I think they just read the first few words, sometimes the answer isn't close to the question. That
being said, that usually doesn't happen. I think it's been better with the asset manager too, at least out has for me.
