Ive been taking Divalproex(Buproprion) Ive been taking it from a VA doctor. I was off of work and had a few operations. From the added stress of my Dad passing away and the financial stress from being off of work and not doing anything I decided to start seeing a doctor to try and talk through things. Im trying to return to work. Since I have to go get my DOT card again isnt having depression and having 2 cervical fusion a guarantee automatic refusal for a DOT card? Any help would be greatly appreciated. What are the EXACT physical requirements to pass the physical, and what if I have narcotics prescribed to me but I only take them when I need them, or if I have the doctor take me off of them completely.? Thanks in advance for any help. Also the doctor is about to permanently rate me with some type of restrictions. Am I pretty much screwed as far as ever driving a truck again?

ask your doc if he can recommend where to get a DOT physical. I was kind of worried about mine because I am on blood pressure meds and also use a CPAP for treatment of sleep apnea. The doc that gave me my physical saw I was under the treatment of "my doctor", so it was no big deal. He gave me a card good for a year.

I think they are really looking for untreated medical conditions, such as sleep apnea or high blood pressure. If you have an illness, but you are being treated for it and your vitals all are good, you may be fine. But here's some other things to consider. If you go some place and don't pass, you're only out $50. There is nothing stopping you from going to the next DOT doc and getting a physical from him. There is no "failed a DOT physical" registry that I'm aware of. Another idea, which I don't recommend, is you can buy a blank DOT physical form at most truckstops for $4.99. I don't think a cop would know who filled it out as long as the address and phone number was a registered DOT doc. food for thought. good luck to you.

In case you are wondering, yes, I once worked at a company where once a year we'd buy a bunch of blank physicals and cards. There was only five drivers, but we'd all fill out a phys and med card for each other signing off as a DOT doc from out of state. Shame on me, but that was back in the old days, and the other drivers were old-school diehards. They weren't in bad health either, just wanted to save the $50 and thumb their nose at the regulations I guess. Obviously, if you somehow got caught. Like having an accident and for some reason they called to verify or something. You would likely be in big, big trouble. automatic CSA fail.

Two different companies and two different times I was shut down for 3 days for one and 5 days from the other I told them I was prescribed Vicoden which is about the same as Loritab if not just another name for it??

They take that stuff seriously. One of the times I was under load and they done a relay just so I wouldn't drive.

You can print blanks off the FMSCA website but gawd they would bury you if you got caught. Starting Jan 2014 I think it is all states will have the medical card with your DMV records. Any leo will be able to pull it up. Some states already implemented it.

I think I read that other thing and it's a $5000 max fine. Not to mention the CSA.

    More depression reads...

Depression won't disqualify you. Simply being PRESCRIBED narcotics won't disqualify you. But USING narcotics will. Just don't tell the DOT doc that you have depression, and don't use the narcs, and CERTAINLY don't carry them on the truck.

Most depression meds aren't detected in DOT drug tests. The anti-depressant you mentioned doesn't appear to be on the list. (21 CFR 1308.11 Schedule I). The physical qualificatiions for driving a CMV are found in 49 CFR 391.41, and section (b)(12)(a) states that:

    (b) A person is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle if that person—

(12)(i) Does not use any drug or substance identified in 21 CFR 1308.11 Schedule I, an amphetamine, a narcotic, or other habit-forming drug.

Hope that helps you out some. :occasion5:
