Spoke recently to a gas tanker driver from a local company and he told me in the winter it’s slower and you only work 40 hours per week. I’ve read ads for this company and they say 50 hour minimum. I had asked if you can work a 6th day to make extra money which he said yes. He said he does 60-70 hours in summer months but it slows down in winter. If I get a gas tanker job I want to work 6 days and do 60-70 hours a week. I like to make the extra money. If in fact it is slower could you get extra work if someone else calls out ?. Also just do I don’t have to start another thread will a gas tanker company refuse to hire a smoker. Obviously I will never light up next to the truck I’d walk a safe distance away. Every company is different but as long as you do your job properly show up to work everyday don’t damage truck and don’t cross dump fuel etc will most companies turn a blind eye to smoking. I’ve seen a couple drivers walk 50 plus ft away near gas station entrance and smoke and I find it hard to believe that I would be the only gas tanker driver that smokes.
Is gas tanker work slower in winter?.

Our fuel tankers slow down in the winter. The slowest time is usually from about Thanksgiving 'til Easter. Our main customers are farming, logging, and construction and when the weather shuts them down our works drops off also. We count on the slowdown every year.
Most of our winter work is hauling JetA and AvGas to some of our local airports. That stays fairly steady.
I can't answer your questions about what a company would do as far as working you all the hours you need. That's individual to the company itself and best answered by the company. Starting out you'll be at the bottom of the seniority list and will pretty much take whatever they give you. After you've been there a while you can figure out ways to increase your earnings.
Smoking? If you're loading or unloading you're required to be "in attendance" at the truck. Strolling off for a smoke while you're unloading will get you fired at most companies. It should, too.
If you have to have tobacco, learn to chew or dip snoose.
As to whether they'll hire a smoker...again, that's individual company stuff. Given two applicants of equal qualifications, one smokes and the other doesn't, I'd take the non smoker.rabbiporkchop, Blackshack46, Shaggy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Depends solely on your region i would think. Here my fuel hauling picks up in the winter.

Around here gas station fuel does slow down yes. Thing is all the fuel delivery companies around here also deliver propane. LP fuel picks up so much they tend to have a hard time keeping up with demand.

Marked diesel to loggers and construction sites.
Jet fuel and avgas to small operations. Gas and diesel to small stations and businesses.
I leave the big stuff to the main players, and i specifically go to the small guys. Right now is the slow time for fuel, generally October and November are the slowest, along with march and April. Summer and especially winter its hard to keep up.
Want to hear about stupid rules though, i am no longer allowed to haul my own fuel to my yard the last 7 years. So i can haul it to everyone else, but not myself.
Apparently some people were hauling marked fuel to their own yards. They ruined it for all of us because of that. So now Chevron hauls the fuel to my yard. -
I probably left some out.Blackshack46 Thanks this.
