Oilfield power subcontractor. Wondering if it might lead to a gig with a cryo company at some point.

What other gases are considered cryo?

    Oldironfan Thanks this.

Almost all gases can be liquid at the right temperature. Some commonly tankered cryogenic liquids are Helium, Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Argon, Hydrogen, Oxygen.

Where I am, the Praxair terminal hoses are covered with woven metal mesh, seems to help with handling by limiting surface area. One of the newer fill hoses has an extra shield at the end, stainless tube that sort of works like the muffler guard on a dirt bike. Sometimes they are frosty because of constant use and they are cold and I limit contact time, do one thing, stop, do another.

We use thick gloves, welding or winter type. Sometimes it gets too cold anyway and we back off for a bit and wave our hands around, saying various things about the temperature with colorful words.

I used to work at an ASU as an operator and would help load trucks often. We had 9 different plants and made 5 products: N2,O2,Ar,LUX and GAN(gaseous N2.)

Is there any cryo driving open in the PHX area? I don't have one year yet but this has been interesting, it clean, takes some involvement, and there's activity, not just sitting all day.

Well, except for right now, waiting for staging. :^)

If you want something really neat, try Gallium III. It's a soft metal that becomes liquid in your hands. Literally melting metal that does not burn you as molten metal like to. Its not a natural metal. You have to combine two substances to get it.

You will find it in the liquid silver doctors blood pressure machines as a alternative to mercury. When combined with 10% tin and 20 some percent something else you have a liquid that moves up and down and wont freeze until about -2 F.

Training class they described 'cold' burns and leather and canvass gauntlet gloves and then mentioned cutting the elastic on the back. said you want them loose so the can be shaken off if the get some of the cyro liquid on them. By the time you feel the burn it is too late, tissue damage has occurred...

YouTube "Man from LOX" it's a classic Navy LOX training video. Real eye opener of the hidden dangers of cryo.
