I am a second week student at a wonderful school called TDI. One of my classmates confided in me that he failed a drug test while working for a small city reading water meters. He was terminated. He has not mentioned it on any of his applications and we are now starting to get pre-application letters back from different companies. Apparently his incident was nine years ago. He said he leaves it off his work history. He seem like a nice responsible guy and serious about trucking where some of the other students are not. Is he going to get caught and suffer over this?
Is it a big deal?

Not if you do not tell anyone.
Craneman Thanks this. -
I would stay out of that one.. Worry about you in this case. Don't talk about it to anyone. TDI ran my background before I could go further in the application process so maybe he is cleared

My friend went through TDI in Illinois She left off having an accident on her application....NOT EVEN HER FAULT..... She got a prehire from Werner went through school got her license... Now she has no job Werner found out any way....
I agree not your busy Do not tell any one Worry about You -
Tell your "friend" to report it.

If he doesn't report it, and gets his CDL, who ever he applies for will find out if he does not include it on his app..

At this point there is nothing in place for company's to share drug test info. Nor is there a regulation that says they have too.
This drug test was failed working for a small city 9 years ago.
It is not on his legal record, and most company's will not call past employers that far back.
And if they are leaving that job off there app, they should be ok.
The only thing they will have to watch is dates.
This is because the DOT requires last 10 years of employment to be on all company's paperwork.
So if they worked there longer than 2-3 months the company will want to know what is in the gap. -
A few posters have forgot about the national insurance data base. Often if a company requires you to drive company vehicles (CDL or not), they have a proticol in place for reporting failed drug tests to their insurer as well as terminations for damages to company vehicles(even minor issues that not do not show on your driving record, that the company self insures for). The company receives a discount if they have these proticols in place, UNISIS will pick this up, in the initial company background check. There is only a handfull of commercial insurers that handle medium to large size companies, and they want to keep track of potenial liabilites. In this day, with all the connected data bases, I would always be truthful "Big Botha"

Shhhhhhhhh, your friend's secret is safe with me. But, I'm not the one considering his app.

Stay out of it. You need to be concerned with you and you alone. In the future tell anyone that wants to tell you some secrets that you're not interested and would care not to know.
