Yea and half of those 44 mil don't want to get a job why work when the government will bail you out and give you everything you want and need to live? You're right gotta love our government. Support the people that don't want to work on the working man/woman's dime. That is another story though.
As for the OP's question. You fill the gaps with unemployed and if you have a reason for the gap and can explain it you will be fine. The starter companies are used to job hoppers and they don't care because a new group comes in each week. You worked for the same company for a long time and stuck it out that right there is a huge plus. And you do not see it much anymore. I honestly don't believe you will have much problem finding a job after explaining your employment gap and why you have that gap. Consider it a vacation
Good luck don't give up on being a truck driver I believe you will be fine.
Is it a crime to be unemployed?

Most companies screen very carefully on criminal backgrounds, and driving record. I have never heard of a company screening on the basis of a period of unemployment. -

If you worked at XYZ Food Plant from 01/1992 till 06/2010 and then you where unemployed 07/2010 till 07/2013 your resume/application should look like this:
Jon Doe
1234 My Street
My Town, My State
(000) 000-0000
Mye-mailaddress@servicename.com
7/2010 to Presently
Unemployed
01/1992 to 07/2010
XYZ Food Plant #379
2345 Their St
Their Town, State
(000) 000-0000 extension (Human Resources Management)
If they ask why you left the food plant just say you left for personal reasons which have since been addressed. It is against the law for them to even ask but if you say nothing they might assume you did something at work that landed you in ail this whole time or worse.
When they call the food processing plant it is also against the law for them to say why you left unless you committed a crime.
DOT only requires your give more then 3 years of employment history if those years were driving a truck and gaps in employment of more than 30 days most be accounted for on the application. Companies handle this in different ways. Some might want a notarized letter and some might want copies of your tax filings for large gaps like yours, so call around. -
it does seem like not working for 30 days is a crime, in the mind of many trucking companies
as far as DOT is concerned, as along as you give an explanation of what you did with that time, its all good
Barr-Nunn told me that they could not hire me if i had not been driving for 37 days............yes, DAYS
(best news they gave me, by the way, made me try that much harder) -

Thanks for the interesting and informative replies everybody. To answer a a couple questions I was asked: I haven't talked to or applied to any companies yet, just learning about it and everything right now. I don't know it seems like kinda a good deal to me to go otr for 1 or two years and then get a local job, that's probably my ultimate dream, I live in the greater Memphis area ( not in Memphis actually in Arkansas across the bridge) so I know there is a lot of freight and opportunities in this area.

Living in West Memphis, you should have no problem finding a trucking job. Another poster on here several months ago, also lived on an inheritance for a few years, and that's what he told the trucking companies. Start applying to companies with company CDL schools, or if you can, go to a private CDL school for even more options. Get your tanker/hazmat endorsements; lots of that work in Memphis & West Memphis.
