Like I said before, I'm no engineer or anything and I could be wrong, but the only conclusion I can come to as to why Eaton (seemingly) doesn't want you using the cheater gear is that the high side gear isn't made to handle such a low gear ratio. The lower the ratio, the more force is applied to the aux box. Gears are essentially levers, like if you got a really tight bolt to unscrew, getting a breaker bar is like using a lower gear ratio. Just like the truck engine doesn't have any more horsepower than it did if you use a lower gear, your arm isn't any stronger when you use a breaker bar, it's about leverage. But like another driver said, don't get on it hard if you use the cheater gear and it's probably fine.
Personally since I've driven 10 speeds so much, I don't mind going to low range for turns in a 13 since you kinda have to anyways when you drive a 10 speed, guess I'm used to it. I know one things for sure, driving it like the manufacturer told you to will never damage anything.
Is it bad to skip gears while loaded (13 speed)

It is a valid question.. Can the entire unit handle the torque in cheater gear?
low hole in the front box is definitely the highest torque multiplier in the front box so feeding it into the aux is definitely creating the most input load that the aux can possibly see. If it was a case of weakness then yes it would definitely go boom. Ive been waiting to see or hear of an exploded unit due to the use of cheater gear for close to ten years now and have not, though they must be out there. I have also personally used it at max weight up max hill with max throttle for several years and no booms so far which leads me toward feeling.. "Itll be ok."
But i dont want to warranty that claim!
Worn out bull gear syncro surface and worn out clutch fork from resting your arm on the shifter in 7th or 8th. Now those are real issues but no one is spreading the news. Even still, anything can go boom at any time for no good reason at all. Thats truckin.Bean Jr. and Cobrawastaken Thank this. -
Years back I read in hanks forum where a transmission rebuilder said something about it transfers power from a shaft with beefy bearings to a shaft with less bearings or something similar??
-
Id need to take one apart to quantify it but yeah, at a glance the center shaft of the aux is fairly wimpy looking and doesnt look like it should live.
The trans i drive has nearly a million behind a 550 cat always heavy and getting pounded by every 1099 pillhead they can get in the seat. No shortage of 6-8% climbs either.
Maybe stronger than they look i guess.Bean Jr. and Cobrawastaken Thank this. -
I think they don’t advertise it and don’t want you to use it because they couldn't explain the shift pattern and it is a redundent gear. L hi is same as 4 low so to most peoples minds you are shifting backwards in ratio before you go forward. But the ones who actually use it dont abuse it and go slow with it and use it to an advantage.

On the flip side of this back in the 2 stick days there were a few combinations that were redundant. Like 3 od and your next step up 4 under would be the exact same ratio. Spicer always said you have to use all the gears no skip shifts. Ha ha.
You'd learn real fast go from 3 dir straight to 4 under or depending on terrian 3 od to 4 dir and skip that nonsense. Those were the days of 200 rpm splits. That means a lot of shifting.Bean Jr. and FoolsErrand Thank this. -
