I said in my comment I was oversimplifying. Those bones convert analog sounds into nerve impulses that are carried along the cochlear nerve. In actuality, I don't think analog or digital applies to how impulses travel along the nerves. While I am on the subject the human inner ear also acts very similarly to the gyroscopic instruments in an airplane. It allows us to know up from down. This is one reason we can get seasick. When our body tells us one thing and our vision says something else as it relates to our balance. I sometimes get sick because the Levetiracetam I am forced to take to control seizures causes me to lose my balance. I have to be very careful climbing and descending stairs. My recent fall, back in Nov is a great example, those broken ribs still hurt. I lost my balance and fell.
