I have wine and beer with me at all times. Why just yesterday I picked up 1232 cases of fine Napa Valley wine.

To get back to the op's question...
Here is the actual regulation from eCFR — Code of Federal Regulations
    (3) Be on duty or operate a commercial motor vehicle while the driver possesses wine of not less than one-half of one per centum of alcohol by volume, beer as defined in 26 U.S.C. 5052(a), of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, or distilled spirits as defined in section 5002(a)(8), of such Code. However, this does not apply to possession of wine, beer, or distilled spirits which are:
    (i) Manifested and transported as part of a shipment; or
(ii) Possessed or used by bus passengers.

Note that it says in possession of, not simply in the cab of a truck. So on a catwalk would still be illegal as is even in the trailer (unless it's the shipment)

Hand, don't over think this. If you are using your truck as a personal conveyance there is no need to do anything but stop and buy that case and slip it in your cab. Your not violating the law (even if you are in a bad accident and 100 people get killed) Take the beer home and enjoy your home time.
