Is it me or is it time to ban recap tires from on-highway use?

And then there's the locals that do their own recapping.

Well on my way home Friday, I blew an outside trailer tire. I’ve been watching those 2 and planning on replacing both soon. Got it off the rim, made my delivery. Bought 2 recaps. $170 each. 1 new Chinese was $355. So despite my opinions, I’m running 2 matching Goodyear recaps. It was an easy decision. So my much for principles and beliefs. Out the window to save a few bucks. Lol. Hey times are tough. So caps it is.

I’m thinking todays Monday. Blew tire on Monday morning. Went home, back out today. I got shut down once on 71 in Ohio for having less than 50% of max rating. Had a nail, could hear it leaking. Must have just picked it up. So OOS, fill tire with my air hose, and away I went. For the longest time I wouldn’t cross a scale without checking my tires. That was bad luck. I think I should have gotten a break. Rules are rules.

There is flirting with disaster, then there is courting disaster. Lotta difference in the two.

Was gonna say. Something is/has changed quite a bit. There is not nearly as many gators/other causes on the road as was years ago.
May be due to better tech in the cap process/better selection of carcass, but more likely more emphasis by carriers emphasizing closer inspection/inflation/ wear levels on their equipment. You carelessly blow a cheap cap job, you have shot a good carcass. Quality in all things, wine, women, songs, even tires.

Can you imagine running on such tires? Forget flirting with or even courting disaster, this would be marriage to disaster.

    Rideandrepair and JolliRoger Thank this.

How much would new Michelin, Bridgestone or Goodyear have been?

I dunno man, it was starting to get comical late last week during the heat wave. Blown out tires all over the place.

Michelin is probably around $600 with no discount, not sure on the other two.
