I have a friend that could not afford and could not get financed to go to truck driving school on his own, so he went to one of those company sponsored training schools. But he never actually intended to work for that company. He did not want to go over the road and living in West Virginia he was able to get an oilfield job where he was home every night, so after training he got his CDL and turned down the job the company offered him, and signed on with his current job.
Now obviously he is still responsible for paying for the school, and he has been paying for it monthly (his new job even reimburses him for it), so that is how he justified it to me. The trucking company is still getting his money, he got his CDL without having to pay up front or finance it himself, and he got the job he actually wanted in the first place. According to him it didn't put any negative marks against him because he never actually worked for the company.
So my question is this...have you ever heard of this, and is it ethical? My gut tells me no, the company is training you with the expectation you will work for them at least a year. But according to him this happens a lot. What do you think?
Is it normal to go to a company sponsored CDL school but not work for that company?

It happens in this industry. Most work awhile then quit long before their contract is up.But for a regular trucking company its unlikely he will find a job while under contract.Once he gets it paid off then that will be removed from his record. So tell your friend to keep his job tell the school is completely paid off.

Yes, it's ethical. I think Swift is right up front about this during orientation. Swift doesn't have a problem with it.
CR England trys to browbeat people into thinking they will ruin your life if you leave, but that CDL is yours, not the trucking companies.
CRST is real aggressive about being paid for their school if you leave before 9 months; can't blame them though. They put an investment in the new driver and want to at least break even.Spacat1 Thanks this. -

Some people don't have the cash or credit to get funding for CDL school. Some don't qualify for state funding. Some are broke and bankrupt and can barely afford to eat every day.
Having said that, some trucking company schools provide schooling, hotel room, 2 or 3 meals a day plus transportation to the school from your domicile at no cost to you. I think Knight even has the student on salary while in classes.
Here's some examples, but there are more.
Knight Transportation
Prime Inc.
Southern Refrigerated Transport

I didn't know Celadon had a school.Anyway if a student quits sometime down the road before the contract is up,would'nt the hotel stay be included with what you have to pay back?
