how about 4500 a pop.USED plus motel. about every 3 months. because it takes an act of congress to get the trans to shift. and the company is too stupid to rebuild the darn thing.

    1.2 million miles

Sounds like you need to go find a new mechanic.

You seem to have "kick me and rip me off" tattooed to your forehead.

I just replaced a tranny a little over a month ago and it cost $2995 for a reman as long as you give your core. I went ahead and bought a new clutch and had my flywheel turned so my total bill on parts and install was $3675. Not to shabby..

I would like to make a suggestion, if and when you do purchase a truck do it in person and not over the internet.

That's not what the guy asked though. He asked about mileage on a truck. You don't even know him or his ability. Are you an owner operator? You got there some how. It's not like you are born with OO stamped on your forehead. :)
I think he is already aware of the high failures of a small business. Give him pointers instead of being negative.

The first steps of starting a business is knowledge of the industry and doing your homework. It sounds like he is attempting to do his homework, has gained sufficient driving knowledge, has the maturity and has the ability to save money. Plus it's a bonus he hasn't jumped into some sucker program.

You keep on going topoff. Just research all angles like you are doing. I think you can be successful.

I wouldn't buy anything over 500,000 miles. You are getting near the wore out stage. You don't want to buy something you have to stick another $10K in right off the bat. People do sell their headaches. Like cars, it's either payments or parts. How much time do want to spend in a shop? What you spend on repairs could be spent on payments and you keep rolling. Then you will have the ability to save even more. Then eventually with a growing business than you can move up to strictly cash. But at first I wouldn't be afraid of some financial assistance. Just utilize strict money management.

You're on the right path. ;)

Major fleets trade cycle is almost always 500,000 miles. This is because they have the money and resources to know that 500 to 750K is the most expensive time to own a truck. Yet this is where most of us buy our used trucks. Until recently I always believed that I should buy the best truck I could afford. Last December I bought a truck from an online auction to resell and make a buck from. It had 905,000 miles on it from a fleet. It had a documented overhaul, head replaced, new clutch, etc, etc. I changed my mind and decided to put it to work. So far it has proven to be a wonderful truck with no major repairs needed. It did come with a cheap set of recaps and we're running them out with only 1 failure which came in the 1st 5,000 miles as they usually do with caps or virgin tires. I found another one just like it from the same fleet and am trying to buy it now. I think that from now on I'm going to look for trucks like these with documented overhauls and repairs that can be bought for a whole lot less than the same 500,000-600,000 mile truck.

What fleet is it from? That would be the best deal right there!

I believe it was an attack. You don't know him but you question him what gives you the right, he was asking about high mile trucks vs new to get a general idea on what direction to take, that is a sound buisness decision to make. What makes you qualified to ask if he has buisness sense , I bet you were not born with buisness sense but had your trial and errors along the way and this is not the only only thread you have been attacking people on. Again your comment has nothing to do with the question asked. Please stick with the topic at hand.
