I know. That was the point that I was making.

You better check to see whether your engine has glow plugs or an intake heater. If it does you will have a very expensive repair bill if you use starting fluid.

How many big diesel engines in class 8 trucks have glow plugs? I have never heard of any, glow plugs are for toys like pickups and RC airplanes.

Joetro, Pmracing and Cetane+ Thank this.

I remember when we had ether shot systems in the truck to assist starting. Of course, I also remember ether-locking a time, or two.
Yes, you can use it, but use it sparingly. I always carry a can, just in case.

Lots of current-model trucks have some form of intake air pre-heat system. As to how long they have been installing them, whether it's five years, or more, I don't know, but they are there.

    Paccar:

That's just one example. All manufacturers have similar systems.

That's all fine and dandy, I never questioned the intake heater, but it is not a glow plug.

Yep what joetro said, trucks used to have a system where you attached a can of ether (starting fluid) directly on the side of the engine --and hit a button or pulled a cord to give it a shot of ether.
I drove a cabover Peterbilt that had that on it !
I have no idea if its Ok in the newer trucks.

    Joetro Thanks this.

Yeah, probably don't want to use it in one of those. Sounds like bad things could happen.
