Is it OK to use starter fluid on a diesel truck engine?

You better check to see whether your engine has glow plugs or an intake heater. If it does you will have a very expensive repair bill if you use starting fluid.

How many big diesel engines in class 8 trucks have glow plugs? I have never heard of any, glow plugs are for toys like pickups and RC airplanes.

I remember when we had ether shot systems in the truck to assist starting. Of course, I also remember ether-locking a time, or two.
Yes, you can use it, but use it sparingly. I always carry a can, just in case.Cetane+ and "Hang - Man" Thank this. -

Yep what joetro said,trucks used to have a system where you attached a can of ether (starting fluid) directly on the side of the engine --and hit a button or pulled a cord to give it a shot of ether.
I drove a cabover Peterbilt that had that on it !
I have no idea if its Ok in the newer trucks.Joetro Thanks this. -
