We still get the loads from the brokers, so my boss pays the broker their fee, then we act as the broker to our O/O, IIRC he gets 90% or 95% of what we charge. So on a load that pays $1,000, he gets $900 or $950.

It would vary by area I think. That's getting into things that I really don't know much about, I just know how our O/O's are treated by our company. About 10 yrs ago, we had an O/O who was looking at doing that, going direct to the broker. But, IIRC, in addition to having his own authority, he had to get his own SCAC code from the rails/piers, and become a full on company. I know of the dray companies in my area, we require our O/O to have his own authority and insurance, but operates under our SCAC code for the ramps. The other companies, for the most part, the O/O's are lease operators, maybe with their own bobtail insurance, but everything else is done under the company, the pay is lower accordingly. Whereas our O/O are getting 90% or 95%, they are only getting typically 75% or 78%.

proud2haul is a good company but they do mostly ports with some doing rails but you need to work your way up, also i heard something about giving money to dispatch to get better loads, theres another one but i forgot the name, if you want to run ports i can recommend you one that pays decent and has their own mechanic

Ruckie you still with Transnoble? I saw they pay flat rate instead of %. Knowing freight pays more in the fall for dry van you would think port goes up in the fall too.
