Is it possible to run your own plate on a leased out truck ?

Honestly, I think it's cause they can't trust guys to renew it properly. This industry is full of idiot operators. Just my opinion of course. But considering I save money using Mercers plate I'll never have my own again.

 

You are right spyder, sometimes it is more of an advantage to use the carriers plates, sometimes not. Depends on where you run vs where they run. A bigger company like Mercer spreads the cost across a lot more states than I do.

 

You are missing the point. What these company's do is take that plate you paid for and sell it to someone else without paying you your share. You sound like a dispatcher.

And if the company wasn't bad people would not quit

You can get an IRP with a lease contract from the carrier you are joining. You’ll also need a COI from the carrier, 2290 and probably something else I’m forgetting.

Been through the process a few times and recommended getting your own tag. If the carrier wants you to have theirs tell them to pound sand. Get your own ifta too.

Used my own plates and IFTA with two companies. Recently with Landstar. Now under my own authority.

 

Thing is if a company did that to you then you stepped right into it and allowed them to do so. The solution is to buy your own plate and it's easy to do.

If you can run your own plate I would say do it
One reason is that if you leave, it goes with you but if it’s their plate you turn it in and many companies will not reimburse you for the $$ you paid for their plate until they get it reassigned to a new driver
I have always self plated but had to use the company I was leased on with due to a title screw up that the dealer messed up when I bought my last truck so I had to use theirs until I got the paperwork fixed

Plates with them were new in February and I left in June and when I turned in my plate it was 15 deep in the pile of O/Ops that had left since renewal
Didn’t get those plates reissued until like Oct of that year
