I was wondering is it possible to get a class A position with no experience if you have been with a local company for 2+ years as a class B driver ? I plan on getting a class A CDL but I don't want to go OTR so I was thinking since im already in the company it would make me a prime candidate to get hired for the position. I might be right about this or I may be wrong but I need to know.

If the position is with your current company, dont see why you couldn't be eligible

if your going to stay with your company, most likely they would rather give the position to you than someone off the street... I got bumped at my old terminal from two dock guys who never driven before in their lives. although they wouldnt put them in a tractor, they had them in straight jobs. Also majority of LTL will hire without experience, heck at my terminal if you have a beating pulse they will hire you as we were short, although I think they got the people now

I worked for FDX ground with a class B for 3 months, got my class A and then quit and got on with a LTL company, never spent a day OTR driving.

It would be easy for the company you're currently at to train you how to drive the tractor, on your own time....if you can find someone willing to do it. That way, you can just slide into the job. But more than likely they'll want someone that knows how to drive the truck right away....

Never hurts to ask tho. Show interest and it could be yours.

You need a class 8 and a driver to get you there to take the tests. NBD

    ANYTHING is possible, driver!:biggrin_2559:

But wouldn't it make a lot more sense to talk to the powers that be in your company, than to ask US?

I just talk to them and see what they think. They could possibly train you with their equipment and get you upgraded to class A. It would be a considerable effort on their part though - you'd have to convince them you're worth the trouble, but that would definitely be the smart way to go about it. Otherwise you'll be out $4-5k for a month long driving school.

Some of the larger LTL's like ABF, Conway, Old D, etc have their own in house driver training programs as well, so that's another avenue if current company leads you nowhere.

didnt know Old D offered that. YRC just started doing it as well. UPSF and Estes will hire with less then the required experience

Yeah they do. Just saw an ad on Craigslist recently where they were looking for dock help in Portland and it specifically mentioned class A driver training was a possibility for advancement.
