Is it possible to simply go out, buy a truck and go to work? Is it possible to sign on with a company as an O/O with the proper equipment but no experience?
Is it possible...?

I suppose anything is possible, but trying to get insurance with no experience may kill you all by itself. I am sure everyone on here will agree that you need to drive for a company for at least a year or two before trying to do it yourself.

It funny but because your leased on to a company you must have experience.
Many OO only companies have min requirements.
Partly because they must vouch for you, and insurance. -
Not to mention, you want at LEAST a year in the OTR trucking industry to know if this is an investment in time and money that you really want to make.

I have a few friends who have NEVER been company drivers. One started with a used truck from another fleet and went to work for a small dry van company. Within 8 months, he had added a second truck. 2 years later, he has 8 trucks running for 2 different companies and is strongly considering getting his own authority. Another ran for a year in an older Pete, then bought a new KW900. He was so enthused about the money he was making that he built a new house and bought a new 3/4 ton diesel 4x4. Now, he's off chucking chain in the Alberta oil fields while his brother drives his truck for a small company. He made every mistake there is to make and is slowly clawing his way out.
The companies I have spoken to that "require" a 5 year old or newer truck say that it's not a hard rule. It's largely dependent on the cosmetic and mechanical condition of the unit. Many are willing to take a driver with less than 2 years if he has a squeaky clean abstract, no criminal record, and is a recent grad of an accredited professional transport driver school.
I say if you're going to go O/O with an older truck and not much experience, check out the "mom and pop" companies in your area.
