I am currently a police officer in Arizona. I am eligible to retire in about 3 years with my pension. I am interested in driving truck as my second career, but not sure if I'll be too old to be starting out...
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Is it tough for a man in his late forties to get hired as a new driver?

You will have some problem adjusting to the vehicles, but you should be hireable, if anyone is hiring new drivers in 3 years.

Thanks for the info. After this many years, you realize that most people dont realy like cops....unless they need one. Its easier to avoid problems if you know what I mean.Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
It'll be tough getting hired but your age won't be a factor . There's a huge oversupply of drivers . Look into expediting . Many drivers for fleet owners are semi-retired . You won't need to go to school to get a job . Just be able to pass the road test on a straight truck . There are some openings on cargo vans - no CDL or log books required . Not much money there but it would get you known in the industry . Check out our Expediter forum

Age won't be a factor---49 is average age for drivers anyways.
It's just that with the economy right now, it's tough for anyone to get hired regardless of age.
But in three yrs, who knows?
Good luck!Retired Thanks this. -
If you decide to go into driving now. I would look at reefer. The economy may be bad, but everyone has to eat. Age wont be a factor. Now being a police officer. I dont see that being a big deal. I have run into many retired police officers on the road.

As long as you can pass a DOT physical...and you aren't one of those cops that live off of donuts...and a clean driving record, you'll be okay. You actually might have an advantage over someone much younger, because you held another job for so long. You're doing the right thing by doing your research now, 3 years before you are ready. I've been researching for 2 years...i'm retired as well and collecting a pension after 30 years at the same job...and will decide after a move to PA, wether I still want to persue driving a truck as my 2nd career...i'm kind of enjoying retired life.

Hitman...
Thanks for the input. No, I'm not one of the donut eaters that can no longer fit in the patrol car. I've stayed in pretty good shape over the years. I have learned a lot from these forums and plan to continue. I am surprised however, that the pay does seem a lot lower than it should be. The thing that attracts me to the job is new scenery every day and variety...not sitting in an office looking at your co-workers.
Again, I really appreciate the input.Hitman Thanks this. -
I'm 52, female and overweight. I got hired. My husband is 62, in good shape and he got hired also.
Oh wait........I'm 53 now. *sobs*
