Is it tough for a man in his late forties to get hired as a new driver?

:biggrin_25525:Go for it, "Retired" and don't worry about letting people know you are a retired cop. As long as you can breathe and pass a physical, I've seen drivers out here in their 70's and seen stories on a couple in their 80's. One guy is in a wheelchair and has a lift of sorts to get him in thru his sleeper. Heck, you can weigh 450 lbs, have a pierced nose, a 3rd grade education and never change your underware AND have denture breathe and you will fit right in......:biggrin_25525:

I don't dislike cops. I dislike the often stupid laws you LEOs are tasked and duty bound to enforce.

That being said.... Your age should not be any sort of disqualifier as a professional driver. Might be interesting to see the Pittman Maneuver done with a semi. LOL

I am 51 and started trucking about 19 months ago. I got on with a tanker company. Lots of companies would rather hire someone like you than an "experienced driver" with 12 jobs on a 20 year resume.

You will be just fine. Youd be amazed at the percentage of drivers that are ex-cops and ex-millitary.

Your physical fitness was never in question, not in your mind or mine. Something else tells me that you are single too. Since youre an active person, why not look into a moving company. You may get a good gig where you pull a display/exhibit around the country. You may have to stay out on the road for 6 months, but you could get a 1 day pass at the local gyms of the cities you visit.

Anyways, best wishes to you, sir. Happy motoring.

I think most people that think it is hard to find a job right now are limiting themselves. They refuse to consider something that isn't within their little box, and it must be little, if they can't find a job.

There are many companies that will hire you in a heartbeat. You may have to pull flats rather than vans, you may have to lease rather than be a company driver, you may have to be baseed out of a different part of the country or not go home as often.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

I'm a retired Police Officer and have been driving for years. Never had a problem with someone not liking retired Police Officers. Good Luck to you.

I must disagree. Maybe it depends on where you live. I got laid off in late Jan. I was making about $29.00 an hour. I can't even get a job at Wally World paying $8.00 an hour. They simply aren't hiring in my area.

No sweat on the cop thing...

There's nothing better than a good cop (and nothing worse than a bad one)...the problem is the shortage of good cops these days.
