Again, I am of the opinion your boss is a keeper. Best move on your end would be to start asking him questions and picking his brain. At the very least you WILL learn a thing or three about the business. You might even find yourself becoming more indispensable to the operation if your boss thinks you are actually beginning to take an interest in the bigger picture.

its like one of our other drivers said to me. he went to several other trucking companies and eventually found his way back to the company i am at now. he said the grass is always greener on the other-side, but really its not.

very sad what happened recently with this driver. he just lost his son to a car accident. his son was 17 years old. brian is a great guy, a good driver, and an asset to the industry. i hate seeing him go through loosing a child. i wasnt sure he was going to come back, but he did after about a week and a half. you can tell he is absolutely torn up over the loss of his child, cant say i dont blame him. i like the guy allot but i find it hard to be around him. you can see the depression in his eyes and i dont think he sleeps well anymore. i just hope he doesnt get in an accident considering he might have a hard time focusing on driving.

i have a 6 year old myself (one of the reasons I WONT drive OTR, a big reason). i cannot imagine loosing my child.

Actually found out kinda by accident that I was delivering to an active logging site and this is a one lane forest service road mind you. Followed a log truck in and thats the only reason I found out. Other wise my dispatch and customer service lady didnt even know. Guess the customer failed to mention that part.

I suggest you become more discrete in what you post. Showing pictures of your truck is fine, if you blur out the name of the company on the door.
Your constant mentioning your boss is also not a good thing to do. He's probably worked a long time to build his company, and most likely would not appreciate that you are sharing details that are more private than you think. How would you be if someone did the same to you?

All because of your whining about his directions. You say safety is not his top priority, at the same time you tell us that whatever little thing that's in need of repair, is taken care of before your next shift. You better start thinking and listening more, and saying less. Eventually someone is going to show him your posts, if it was me, I'd be furious, and you'd be walkin on down the road. I have driven dumps just like you do, and my boss didn't fix anything until you were on the side of the road. And he'd yell over the 2 way radio like a friggin lunatic. And yes we would get extra unplanned loads, and I felt like they gave me a bonus, every time I got one. You should chase everyone you can get, and stop arguing with him. I don't think you really know how good you got it.

Some of the posts in this thread are coming from OTR drivers. And for them they need to know exactly where they're going. Right down to the zip code and phone number. That advice does not apply to what you do.

You're driving a dump truck locally, so your dispatch is like: Go to XYZ Gravel bank, get a load of crushed, and take it to ABC Construction job site on Smith Road, lot 37.
Get a notebook, and scribble down the details. I'm sure you can handle a cup of coffee while driving. It's the same thing. Buy a good local map of the area, with a street index. Pull over the first chance you can. Figure out the route, and start moving. Use that notebook to keep a record of everyplace you've been. Then if you're still stumped, call in as a last resort. I'd assume you're a local guy, who grew up in that area. You probably know way more than you think you do. But when you get nervous, can't remember anything. So avoid getting nervous when they call you. Also get his cell phone # so you can call him privately, less embarrassment for you.
Sorry if this is a bit harsh, but you need to end this thread for the reasons stated above. If it was me, I'd ask the Admin to delete the thread entirely. You got a family to worry about. That's job #1.
    Good Luck
    ZZ

I just did an extended tour of NY state and thought of you OP-LOL. Tried NY style pizza for the first time and it was excellent, although Chicago thin crust is my favorite. The central and southern parts of the state has amazing scenery and forests. I never knew what a nice state it was.

Yep most people probably think NYC with any mention of New York.
I've been through several areas myself.
