I have been working for the same company (23 years),local job, home every night.Average 60k to 70k/year.I was offered a local job in Milwaukee with Hub Group as an Owner operator ,paying $1.20 to $1.35/miles .I found a 2012 Volvo D13 Day Cab with 220K selling for 29k.Would you recommend using a 2012 Volvo D13 for Intermodal? How much money can you really make on those Intermodal local jobs with Hub Group?

    Thank you.

Is that 1.35 plus fuel surcharge? Or a flat 1.35?

This position would have to come with a bunch of perks to even consider it. 100% paid for plates, insurance, 2290, IFTA, tolls, steep fuel discounts etc.

When you figure .40 for fuel (per mile), .15 for maintenance, .20 for etc bobtail insurance and etc ... your already looking at .75 cost per mile. Subtract that from the rate per mile your already down to .60 a mile. So say intermodal is 80,000 miles per year that’s $48,000 annually then take tax’s out

You have a pretty good deal going for you already.
Could you do better as an owner op? Yes
Could you do a lot worse as an owner op? Definitely
Plus you have nothing to worry about now.
I run five days a week, home on weekends. But at least Saturday is always spent on maintenance and repairs. You get to put your feet up.

@jonjon - I like what I'm doing (11/12 Hrs day) but I can't make more than 60/70k a year. If I don't try something else I will be stuck on this forever.Thank you for the reply

Ashley Distribution had an ad months ago for cdl-a driver as a company driver.
This was for truckload, not delivery to homes. The ad I saw was for Milwaukee drivers.
One driver that sometimes posts on here said he makes between $70K -$80K per year.

Cannot make more than 60 or 70K? Thats either mountain of bills, debts, kids in college or whatever else making a mockery of that big nice salary and tenure at your company.

You do not want to jump over into intermodal and suffer the expenses and so on. Your wife will be put out pretty fast. Inter-modal is not known for equipment that is in working order. Not to mention god knows how heavy you are fixing to be when they thump a fat box making you 120K gross, hopefully you have a permit for that weight. Or one for alcohol or whatever.

I suspect that you might be feeling the 4 walls a little bit. It's only natural. What I suggest on your time off is literally take up something new provided you are physically able to do it. (Example horseback on weekends) that has nothing to do with your problems at home, debts or work.

You would only be stepping into a intermodal box that will not give you the mountain of dollars beyond 70 you seek. And god help you if you were late and missed the train or ship departure when due that date and time.

I cannot imagine the pile of wallet cards you will need on hand just to access a intermodal seaport etc. Things have changed very drastically since 9-11. For example if you had anyone with you, they have to sit outside the gate itself potentially most of the day while you get the box and clear inspections and repairs etc. You will also probably be adding US Customs wherever it be at to the mix. And so on so forth etc.

Ive hauled it in my time as a youngster. It's easy then. Just needed to stay awake. You seem to be well established in your existing company. Start looking for peers in your line of work. If someone wants to hire you away at 85K or whatever to get you to migrate to the new outfit then by all means. But trucking is the fastest way to make a small 100,000 fortune out of a large million fortune.

Tell your company you need a raise.I didn't think to much on it,but it seems to me you'd be giving up guaranteed money for maybe money.Did you take into consideration all the expenses,fuel,tires,parts,ins.,taxes,etc.etc.etc. And then competing with other drivers, and load availability,and,and.....Like the first hand said keep your day job.JMO

That tells me you are fixing to be a owner operator of a tractor possibly either your own or a lease. That's the last thing you want to be involved in right now.

Those are owner operator or lease operator type numbers not employee W2 numbers.

Which means probably a 1099 taxes for you. Im not sure if you want to be involved in that.
